It has been years since I have been to the Melbourne Zoo and it was with much excitement that we made a family outing. The gardens & enclosures and great (compared to when I was a kid!) and we really enjoyed the new Elephant area. The zoo is big, with lots of path's branching off; which can be a little frustrating and although using a paper map supplied by the zoo- we still ended up taking wrong roads on our quest to see a specific animal.
Eating areas are quite frankly terrible! We made a plan to eat early (11.30am) and luckily only had to line up for around 10 mins or so. Later in the day we saw lines stretching forever. The food selection is really average, but the price OMG. Take out a second mortgage! We spent $40 on 3 drinks,1 bucket hot chips,2 dim sims & what was meant to be beef noodles.(still searching for the beef) Luckily I bought sandwiches & water along with us too. And there is not a lot of seating areas undercover. So the small amount of tables on offer are either wet, soggy, poo riddled tables or out in the sun, bird poo riddled tables. Sitting on the lovely lawn is also an option..... if you can find a spot not already taken up by families and their picnic rugs. Have to say even Bali Zoo has a much better eating area, restaurant! (and tastier food)
The 2 year old LOVED seeing the animals, as did the 15 year old and Mum & Dad. Will we be back- YES; but best start saving now so we can afford to eat there.
