“Had to laugh....”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We booked this Hotel as a last minute decision to stay in the city so we got a good deal, and it had onsite parking. The free City Tram leaves from right outside the Hotel and then after that, not much else great to say about it. The room size is OK, the bathroom is on the small size but the shower was good and hot. We booked a "Grandview" room which is a little more expensive than the "non-grandview" rooms, so I was a little disappointed to find that the window is sssooo small, about 1.5 metres by 1.5 metres, such a pokey hole for a "Grandview", and then factor in the point that since their website photos were taken 2 large buildings have gone up on the waterfront so they block the view of the waterfront! There is still a pretty decent view, but the window was dirty and quite frankly I felt a little claustrophobic.
The ironing board was shonky, the iron had burnt something on the hot plate, the hair dryer wouldn't stay open and kept shutting on my head and we couldn't find a station on the TV that was watchable, none of them had a clear signal, add to that the wonderful view we had into the Remand centre with its guard tower that overlooks the prisoner's exercise yard and we just had to laugh.....
I also noticed the tiled wall behind the reception desk was dirty, yuk! There is also a major construction site right opposite the Hotel and they started work at 7am but the noise was minimal, however, whatever they are building has just started and they will be working there for some time, if it's a multi-story building then the "Grandviews" just got even less of a grandview. haha!
Look, having said all that we really just needed a bed for the night so none of that really mattered, and it was priced ok for us. Other people seem to have had a good stay but we would not return.

While it's not in the CBD, It's walking distance to Docklands and Southbank. The rooms are not huge but perfectly adequate with, panoramic views, nice bathrooms and great beds. Everything was neat and clean. I'd stay here again.

We stayed three nights at this hotel which was conveniently located in Spencer St opposite Southern Cross railway and bus station. The trip from the airport was easy as this was the endpoint for the airport shuttle and we also took the bus to Ballarat when we left Melbourne. We had a "grandview" room on the eighteenth floor (included breakfast) which was a minimum 2 night special and great value. The buffet continental breakfast included eggs and baked beans. I would like there to have been more fruit for cereal eg. stewed fruit, bananas etc. Apples were provided. It was easy to take the circle tram to locations around the city and there was a Coles supermarket in the street. Queen Victoria Markets and other sights and places are within easy walking distance.

Great - Stayed for 4 nights - Jan 2013, we frequent Melbourne twice a year, found the place very clean and friendly, we had two rooms booked with teenage kids, Continental Breakfast was included and for the price we paid it was definitely Great Value, free Tram at corner of Spencer & La Trobe, walking distance to Docklands, Etihad Stadium, Bourke St, Collin St, DFO Docklands, Lygon St and was about 15-20 min walk to Southwharf, will return,

Great Staff, Clean and Welcoming !!!

Stayed there for 3 nights during the Australian Open .Hotel was booked out yet we found the place very quiet . Walking distance to Coles and Southern Cross Station were the Sky bus Depot is.The free City Circle tram can be caught on the corner block and its a short walk for all other tram services. The breakfast was simple but would like to see more fruit on the menu. Would stay there again maybe free WiFI would be handy

Recently stayed for the australia open. Would have rated it an excellent hotel (new facilities, free breakfast, great location, reasonable price) if there was some basic cleaning of the room done.
For 5 days of our stay, except for changing towels and quick tidy-up of the vanity & the beds, no cleaning/vacuuming was done. Every night on returning to the hotel we saw the same toothpaste marks, same crumbs & hair on the floor etc... The staff i spoke to seemed used to this kind of complaints and just brushed off with a insincere 'sorry'. We were just expecting a minimum level of cleaning that even a 3 star hotel can offer. I read a few other similar reviews before and felt that this hotel has great potential to get much higher rating if the management can take a serious look into the problem.

Room Tip: rooms with the dockland or city view better.

Stayed here for the Australian Open for 4 nights in January 2013. A tad bit too far to walk to the free city tram but had a Coles grocery store across the street which was convenient. Southern Cross Station is ver close, a few blocks walk and there are several places to get free wi-fi (Pie Face, Hungry Jacks, Starbucks). Also, there is a Subway shop close which is an inexpensive place for lunch considering the prices in Melbourne.
The staff was friendly but one girl just didn't know where things were. She might have been new but didn't know the basics like where a bank was or the names of the streets. Kind of frustrating considering the staff of a hotel should know these things.
Internet is not included and neither is breakfast - $12 if you want it. The Pie Face is close and a neat place to get coffee and a breakfast pie for half that - with the free wi-fi.
If I went to the Open again, I would stay a little closer to Flinders and would book at the Quality Hotel - Batman.
