“Would stay again - excellent service”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

We stayed as a family on the Moomba Saturday night in a twin deluxe room. The fitout of the rooms was very nice - very comfy beds, big fluffy pillows, cuddly doonas. Amazing staff everyone so cheerful and obliging. We even chose not to use the valet parking and they were happy to have our car left or the front while they took our bags up and we got organised. The only negative was that due to the age of the building the pool was quite small and cold and not up to the standard of equivilantly priced hotels. Loved the location, a block from China town, a couple from Bourke St. Finally found the photos hanging in the hotels just beautiful, it was good to see Melbourne in much earlier times.

My friends and I were greatly disappointed in a hotel nearby and needed to transfer elsewhere. Once the staff learned of our quest, they went out of their way to accommodate us. We were given clean, comfortable and gorgeous rooms. The Marriott staff is well trained and has empathy for travellers. If additional stars were added to the rating scale, then the Melbourne Mattiott would be given a higher score.

Stayed here for a week. Better sized rooms than the Sydney Circular Quay, only down-side was when I opened the curtains and could only see a concrete wall a metre away. We were tired and could bother to change room, and I had requested a high floor. Hmmm

Service
-------
They seem friendly enough, don't seem to interact with the guests much. I suppose since the front desk is far from the entrance, you tend to pass straight to the lifts and are 20m away from anyone. The concierge is usually busy handling baggage to talk, and no doormen, hence your impression is a bit impersonal. I'm sure they aren't really, but anyhow. Cleaning staff are friendly, though, full marks for that

Bedrooms
--------
I had a twin room. Decent sized with a small corridor to the left leading to a wardrobe and the bathroom. Great 46in LCD, decent channel selection with HD programs. Glass table and 2 chairs, bar area with fridge, kettle, and unusual for a hotel, a toaster inside the drawer. Air-con was above the bar, we found it a bit noisy on low, unbearable when on high. The beds are comfy with plush mattress tops, clean linen, duvet and large pillows. Carpet is clean, seems the deco is only 2 yrs or so, so not scuffed and worn away yet

Bathroom
--------
Walk-in shower, no bath. Hot shower, nothing special. Usual toiletries but not 5 star worthy, clean thick towels and plenty of face towels, hand towels etc. Clean and no hairs, mould or anything to worry about

Location
--------
Just a half-block from Chinatown, and within the 35 free Circle-line tram loop, so only 10 mins walk to Swanson/Bourke street or Flinders station/Federation square. Few places to get food nearby, there's a great Vietnamese run coffee / cafe a few shops away. 7-11 is on the oppostite side of the intersection.

Others
------
Plenty of coffee, teabags etc to make hot drinks, but no free bottled water. Irritating card-key in the lift (I hate those, especially when carrying bags/ shopping, not expected in a 5-star, only useful in threadbare staffed motels who have no security personnel). Tried the bar on the g/f, got a 20% coupon off, pretty good seafood double platter for $58, and happy hour $5 drinks, waiters were reasonably attentive but a bit clumsy

Overall - highly recommended, not really any grumbles except for lack of a view.

Thank you SO MUCH for your in-depth review. Greatly appreciate your time. Being in the central CBD, and not a skyscraper building, views from all rooms are impossible. Rooms which face Exhibition Street however have a lovely outlook, so please do request this allocation next time, I'm sure you would be much happier. Sorry you didn't mention it at the time as we could have easily moved you. Security these days is our priority, and although we appreciate it can be annoying using your card in the lifts, we do feel it is important. Cold, soggy toast is never appealing on a Room Service tray, so the introduction of toasters in all rooms has been well received. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay overall and look forward to the oppotunity to welcome you back again soon.

After a long haul flight and budget hotels I was appreciative of the service and comfortable room. It was a shame to leave. Central, clean, friendly service what more could one want. I would certainly choose to stay again.

As a long-time fan of city hotels from the major chains, I am always surprised when I visit a property in the very center of a high-class town like Melbourne, Australia and find the big chain hotel to be lacking. In the case of this wonderfully located property, I was satisfied, but only that.

This Marriott Inn is located adjacent to some major Melbourne icons - it's across the street from the Telstra Communications Headquarters, across the intersection from the theater district, only two blocks down Exhibition Street from the Little Bourke Street entrance to Chinatown, and just one more block away from a host of great restaurants and entertainment located on Bourke Street, including some fabulous restaurants that I'll be reviewing separately.

Sadly, unlike some of the other reviewers here who perhaps don't have the breadth of Marriott experiences that I have, I was disappointed in most of the amenities of this site. For example, the executive lounge is small, the staff not wonderful, especially capable or friendly, the breakfast simple and very underwhelming and the evening treats were but one step above microwaved appitizers from your freezer. The front desk and room service, didn't make my day.

The one restaurant - which also serves the same menu to room service customers - has a very limited selection and is somewhat overpriced for what's available. Likewise, the wines are good, but at the asking price, and in a place that's located a stone's throw from some of the best red wines in the world in South Australia, I was disappointed to say the least.

The room I reserved was nice, and the furnishings basic, and if you are a dedicated Marriott Rewards customer, then you'll be satisfied as I was, but don't expect more. If you make the decision to stay in this property, then at least jump across the street and enjoy a very high quality and low-cost lunch at the food court attached to the Telstra Building, or make the journey down Exhibition St. turn right on Little Bourke and try Chinatown for some good eats nearby, including the Dragon Boat, the Shark's Fin House, Lin Nam or walk down to Swanston St. and get some excellent Taiwanese beef noodle soup or vegetable dumplings at the very teriffic Taiwan Cafe.

Room Tip: Get an upper floor room for some pretty views of the city

The Melbourne Marriott is in a good spot to be able to explore the city. Close to shopping, restaurants (the Greek districts is delish!) and easy to jump on the free city trolley. If you're a Gold/Platinum member of Marriott then you'll really enjoy the Executive Lounge that offers great breakfast and evening services (including hot dishes and cocktails). My wife & I stayed here for a few nights during our vacation and found all of the staff to be very friendly and really helpful when it comes to making recommendations for enjoying their lovely city! We were even surprised with a bottle of sparkling wine in our room from the concierge after we had asked him a few questions earlier in the day.
