Must recommend the 'Superior Rooms' or better for more than one person staying for more than one night. The hotel is clean, comfortable, superbly positioned but not grand. The staff were helpful. The bed and ensuite were excellent, don't expect anything more. Step outside the door into buzzing Melbourne. Walk, tram, eat and shop. It's all there. Will have to go back.

Room Tip: Pick a 'Superior Room ' or better if staying for more than one night, or more than one perso...

Location Location Location – the phrase was written to describe the best feature of Causeway Inn on the Mall (CIOTM).
If your reason for visiting Melbourne is for shopping then this has to be one of the best places to stay. It is right in the heart of the CBD and you literally fall out of the front door of your hotel and into the Bourke Street Mall – and you are but a heart beat away from Collins Street and in between all the brilliant lanes of coffee, treats, meals and exceptional shopping.
CIOTM is truly one of the most well placed facilities I have ever stayed at. The hotel is not new and sparkly and has an odd arrangement of two lifts to get to the rooms BUT my room was quite spacious for such a location and price AND was very clean. The bathrooms are old and as such a bit worn around the edges and could do with a very good dose of bleach and elbow grease on the shower floor but all of the linen that was presented each day, was fresh and clean and the room looked like it had been ‘blitzed’ every evening when I returned, was not only clean but tidy.
There is a buffet breakfast included in the room charge but I did not partake of this although when I went out each morning to go and have ‘breakfast in the lanes’, there were plenty of hotel guests having their breakfast at CIOTM and the trays of fruit and pastries did always look most pleasant.
That being said, that is the only meal available at the hotel and there is NO room service provided, and the close by cafes and restaurants in the Causeway do not open in the evenings, so that might be worth bearing in mind for people who are planning on taking their evening meal close to where they are staying.
The service at CIOTM was most impressive and the day staff that I spoke with on several occasions were all very attentive, responsive and incredibly helpful. The ONLY thing that I would say where service was let down was that there were NO instructions in the room as to how any of the devices worked or any of the ‘features’ of the room and hotel. One usually finds a little ‘welcome’ folder in hotel rooms providing you with this information, but this was missing from my room – so I had to work out how everything worked through trial and error. Not a drama but for some people that might be a nuisance that detracts from the rest of the good things about the hotel – which also provides you with a copy of the daily newspaper. That was an unexpected treat – and helps you to keep up with the world while you are on holiday. PLUS the whole hotel is non smoking - which no doubt helps with helping the whole place feel so clean.
OVERALL I would recommend CIOTM to other travelers, especially those new to Melbourne or going for the express and only purpose of shopping. The location is fantastic for ease of access, and returning quickly to drop off your bags and freshen up. And for the price charged, one would expect to be situated some where much further out from town. Convenient, convenient, convenient.

Room Tip: I did think when I was making my reservation that I wanted a Mall room - which overlooks Bourke Stre...

Booked for a week through the hotel because it was actually the cheapest available in the area of town I wanted to be in even including some of the deals on Wotif.

Wasn't expecting too much for the price and it was pretty much on par. Fairly small room (smaller than the pictures on the website make it out to be). and the bathroom definitely wasn't anything special. Not exactly spectacular views but you get what you pay for!

However! The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the TV worked fine.

You could not ask for a better location, walking distance to pretty much everything.

You get what you pay for you certainly couldn't fault the location with shopping/cafes etc at your door step.
We had a superior room which was basic but adequate we knew with the price it wasn't going to be the Ritz it's proximity to everything made up for the lack of facilities in the hotel itself.
The standard of cleanliness could be improved particularly the windows.
Most staff were friendly and helpful,we had asked for an early wake up call for our flight out to NZ however this didn't happen the guy on the desk offered no apology which was disappointing luckily for us we were using this service as a back up and not relying on it.

We booked a Queen room in this hotel, it was very small and a bit claustraphobic, we went back down to reception to see if we could upgrade, we were offered another 'larger Queen' only difference being it was a disabled person's toilet making it bigger, we finally paid for an upgrade to a superior room which i have to say was not much bigger, it would have been a nice view onto the mall had the windows been cleaned in the past year, it was also the same in the other rooms, the windows were filthy, rooms were tidy, and cleaned every day, the location could not be bettered, handy for everything, but not a hotel i would spend more than a few nights in. Three stars is just about right.

Room Tip: Pay for an upgrade to a mall view!

Stayed September, 2013 our second time here. Location, location, location, with cafes and bars nearby. Booked a room with a room with a view... straight into Myers toy department. The room was clean, tidy and Melbourne tight... just enough room for a comfortable bed. Breakfast was available but choose the Melbourne lane cafe scene instead.
Parking was available across the road for $20 unlimited time

Room Tip: If you like the view choose a room overlooking the Bourke st mall

Stayed here in August, 2013, Great location, with some lovely cafes and bars nearby, the room was clean and tidy, the bed was comfy. The lady on reception when we arrived wasnt very nice but the staff we encountered after that more than made up for her bad manners. Breakfast was very good and plentiful (continental).
