Owner description: The Melbourne Cup Carnival is an unequalled world-class event that encompasses the finest racing, entertainment, fashion, culture, food and wine all in one place - Flemington. Be enthralled and swept up in the magic of the celebration that stops a nation™! Held across four days from 1 to 8 November, it is unrivalled in its prestige and tradition and is the unmissable social occasion of the year. Encompassing the famous Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, along with three other key racedays, AAMMI Victoria Derby Day, Crown Oaks Day and Emirates Stakes Day, the Melbourne Cup Carnival holds a unique position in world racing as there is no comparable week where crowds of such magnitude gather to celebrate thoroughbred racing. The Emirates Melbourne Cup is the iconic race of the Carnival, with increasingly the best thoroughbreds from around the world showcasing the very best of the sport. Trackside, the event is a spectacle of fashion and entertainment, combining friends and families with corporates and celebrities. Firmly established as an unequalled international and Australian draw card, Melbourne embraces domestic and international visitors alike to bask in the excitement and revel in the glamour of the Birdcage, Flemington lawns, marquees and some of the finest hospitality and entertainment it has to offer. As a cultural and sporting event its lure is magnetic and undeniable, attracting crowds who descend upon Flemington to be a part of the truly unforgettable experience that is...the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The beauty of the course must be seen from the Grandstand if possible. Amazing watching the horses charge down the famous Flemington straight as well as around the bend heading for the finishing post. The spectacular atmosphere due to the friendly people ... didn't see any louts, nongs or morons. We had a couple of small bets with one winner from a recommendation of a nearby punter. Best time to go is in springtime, but it is busy. If you don't like huge crowds then opt for a less important meeting (not the VRC Carnival ... derby, oaks, cup) or go in Autumn.

Our Saturday visit was on Volunteers Day, so free entry. Good start. Then for around $6 we participated in a tour of the facilities, including visiting the weigh in room after a race. Fascinating stuff. Had a couple of bets and blew my money. Didn't matter, we loved the place.

I was privileged to be at Flemington to see Black Caviar win the Lightning this year. The VRC put on a very well organised day with extra activities from Shetland pony rides to a nail bar to the Black Caviar Walk of Fame. The amenities at Flemington are world class and well worth a visit whether you are into racing or not. There is not a bad seat in the grandstand and a bar or food outlet at every turn. You can get close to the horses or enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Who knows, you might even see the next champion go round.
