Owner description: Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas - the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre. Since that time we've grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the world, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton's cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema. With our exclusive seasons we've brought Melbournians their only chance to see on the big screen films such as Ex Machina, Snowpiercer, Mud, The Witch, Cabin in the Woods, Margaret, Weekend, Citizenfour, Winter Sleep, Under the Skin, The Bling Ring, I Am Eleven, and of course Lygon Street: Si Parlo Italiano. Cinema Nova was among the first cinemas in the country to start screening stage productions from around the world, and we now draw thousands to see the Met Opera and London's National Theatre from the comfort of our theatres. Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event. From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

A great cinema if you want to see films which are not mainstream. Many arthouse films can be seen here.

Cinema Nova is my pick to see film in Melbourne. They do a wide range of films, but specialise in Art house. There is an excellent tapas bar with a balcony overlooking Lygon St. They have recently started a food and wine service at some screenings on a friday night, and we recently tried this. $59 for 3 courses (dessert is just a choc top but still pretty good!!), & 2 glasses of wine and your ticket to the movie, I thought it was pretty good value. The food is easy to eat and fresh.
Parking is easy , there is a car park in Lygon Crt and if you get your movie ticket stamped you get a discount on your parking. This applies to all of the shops in Lygon Crt.
