The Japanese Bath House was a lovely place to relax and unwind. It is located about 25-30 minutes' walk from Melbourne's Chinatown district. It is also accessible from Tram 109, Stop 16.
Location/Getting there: 59 Cromwell Street Collingwood. I walked there from my central city hotel. Go east down Little Bourke Street right through Chinatown to the end of the street. Turn left into Nicholson Street, walk straight ahead to Victoria Parade. Saint Vincent's Hospital should be in front of you. Cross over and turn to the right and walk down Victoria Parade for about 20 minutes. Cromwell Street is on the left. The website has a map and Tram directions,(www.japanesebathouse.com).
The facility has gender segregated showers, sauna and hot bath. You strip off, enter the shower area and clean yourself before entering the hot bath. The bath itself was not too large so numbers of users can be limited. Advance bookings are a good idea.
You pay for one hour's bathing and can then use the Tatami Lounge where you can purchase drinks and a Shiatsu acupressure treatment.
If you are looking for an oasis from a busy time in Melbourne it's worth the effort to visit.
Is closed on Mondays. Tues-Fri 11am to 8pm last booking, Sat/Sun 11am -6pm last booking.
