Great location and atmosphere. The coffee is okay and food not that bad. Can get a little busy so you need to time your visit.

Second visit to Chez Dre - the first was fine except for several items added to our bill that we did not order.
Second visit, three of us arrived on a sunny morning at 10am. The courtyard was half empty, and there were several tablets free inside. As soon as we entered we were told they were not taking any additional people. We asked for an explanation - were all these tables reserved or something. No, they were just not taking anyone else and there would be at least a half an hour wait.
There's so much choice in Melbourne they will not get another chance - second and certainly last visit.

We waited 40 minutes for breakfast in a half filled cafe. Over mushed (practically puréed) avocado on soggy blond toast and a huge pile of red pickled onion which was overwhelming in its smell. It looked unappetising and tasted it. I paid $14.50 for granola and a set yogurt. Could have eaten this at home. The thing that bothered me was the inside of the glass food cabinets were streaky. Not exactly appealing.

It’s never great to find disappointing service and food but I think it might be worse if the cafe once had a good reputation.
We’d heard of Chez Dre and we’d recently purchased bread there ( delicious), so we went back for brunch.
From the outset it was clear there’s no one overseeing the dining areas- there are three young women- lovely but clearly inexperienced wandering around with no clear idea of what to do or who is doing what.
We seated ourselves, moved tables together ourselves and got menus ourselves. Finally one server came with water and took our coffee orders. Two minutes later another server came to take our coffee order.
Coffees arrived- well, 3 out of 4 arrived. The macchiato took 3 attempts before it came and then it was more latte than macchiato.
Food - omelette, croque monsieur, bruschetta (not French) were ok. However the carrot cake was very dry and the cream cheese frosting so dry it had split. Carrot cake was returned, replaced with a piece only marginally better.....
Look it wasn’t awful but clearly there are issues, with such a large dining space someone needs to keep on top of things.
There are so many great places in South Melbourne- it’s not hard to understand why Chez Dre was quite empty....
We won’t be back anytime soon.
BTW Adulting is harder when the cake is awful ‍♀️

Sunday mid morning, had to wait to get a table. Asked to wait at one end of the restaurant, then the other, all a bit tricky as there are two entrances.

Coffees were good as were the breakfasts: an omelette; crushed avocado; and a mushroom bruschetta.

Apart from the initial mix up with seating, staff were efficient and friendly.

A good breakfast but perhaps lacking that wow factor.
