“Really fascinating naval exhibition”

Great fun for my two younger children to poke around an authentic naval ship. Wonderful to explore from the depths of the engineering areas, to the captains cabin

“A worthy relic at a fabulous location”
Reviewed December 25, 2011

HMAS Castlemaine is a relic and monument is good condition, moored at Gem Peir in historic Williamston, just a few kilometres from the city. Withe the backdrop of the Melbourne skyline at its back and carefully maintained facade of mid 1800's buildings on the other, the Castemaine is instructional and a reminder of fragility of our fighting ships from the past

“Small boy heaven”
Reviewed November 22, 2011

My wife and I recently took our 9 year old son to visit the HMAS Castlemaine at Williamstown after reading a very favourable review in the paper. This is a WWII small ship restored to running condition with a few other museum atrtefacts thrown in. The volunteer guides actually served on this or similar vessels and are happy to chat about all of their experiences, this gives you a "real life" perspective which was my personal highlight. They also took you down into the engine room and gave a demonstration of how everthing worked and explained all of the various roles. On deck there are three different guns which are fully moveable so you can sit/stand in or on and pretend to operate. My son was in small boy heaven and could quite happily have spent the rest of the day shooting imaginary objects whilst we spun the cannons around and changed their elevation. This trip was brilliant it gave you real insight into the conditions the sailors lived under and yet again made you realise what extraordinary sacrifices these men made. We could have stayed much longer than the two hours we spent but got too hungry. All of Williamstown's cafes etc are just a stone throws away so the location is very family friendly as well. Can't rate this highly enough. The family fee was only $15 which we thought was a real bargain.
