“A work of art”
Reviewed May 25, 2013 via mobile

Persimmon is exactly the kind of restaurant you'd hope to find in one of the best art galleries in Australia. Quiet, efficient, refined but not posh, it definitely makes you feel special. The view onto the garden is lovely. The service was faultless. The food was sublime. And the icing on the cake was receiving a 10% discount on the bill for being an NGV member!

“Tucked away but worth the look”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

This restaurant is at the back of the gallery and you may need to ask for directions but it is a pleasant bright place with window on 3 sides giving a view of the sculpture garden and it could be more cosy it has the modern sleek look. My friend is a vegeterian and the choice was limited to 1 which didn't appeal but the chef make a her a different choice which as excellent. My suggestion however would be to give the poor vegos a better go with at least 2 selections. I was happy with the duck and beetroot combo and the chestnut macaroon desert it was delicious. The wine list was good and they served an excellent pink Muscat and much to my surprise it was very light and refreshing as a desert wine, will order again. it was a pleasant if not memorable lunch defiantly a good choice if visiting the gallery.

“Great art work and great food, all in one destination.”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

The NGV has long been a favourite destination for us. Have had membership of the NGV for many years and always enjoy the major visiting exhibitions as well as some firm favourite regular artworks.

Such a delight for us to discover Persimmon restaurant right in the Gallery.

Beautiful surroundings with three glass walls looking out to the manicured gallery gardens. A perfect backdrop.

The Persimmon menu is very contemporary, the meals beautifully presented and very enjoyable, though not too generous in proportion.

This restaurant is open for lunch, but at present, does not open for dinner.

“Classy”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

With it's beautiful sculpture garden outlook, smart service and inspiring menu, Persimmon is a winner. But, be warned, don't arrive too hungry, the meals are rather small. The john dory was excellent but the foaming whipped egg white accompaniment was rather odd. The Crunchy crab & scallop dumpling was however a disappointment, more deep fried and less "dumpling" than I would have wanted. The entree of tempura-like calamari had a strong sage flavour reminiscent of a dish from 1940's but it was interesting. Persimmon is also rather expensive compared to say its interstate competition at the Art Galley of NSW for in Sydney (for instance). Still, the clearly NGV is well worth a visit and is free. The Persimmon is not but they were kind enough to honour my interstate AGNSW membership with a 10% discount. It was overall a good lunch!
