Description: We are rustic, charming and just like that holiday you always want to have but run out of time. Pop in and forget Melbourne for a moment. Our wait staff mostly have a Latin background and will enthusiastically promote the best from 'their' part of the world! Come enjoy our authentic Mexican courtyard, discreetly hidden out back! The food is fresh and tasty, playing with Mexican flavours providing value for money. Fun is what you get at Maya, and lets be fair, fun is why you drink TEQUILA! Our Dinner Menu includes many favourites but with a twist, with the help of local tortilleria El Cielo, authentic Mexican flavours will be ensured. Try the street snacks, 'Antojitos' for something creative that will compliment your drink, or eat many. That's the idea! Our food is designed to share, however if you feel like going solo, and perhaps rising to the claim 'the best Burritos' in town, well please be the judge! We cater easily to the growing needs of gluten intolerant, our tortillas used for the tacos and set menu are gluten free, made only from corn flour. There also many options across the well thought out menu, please ask our waiters who will be more than happy to help.

“Decent food but not worth it”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

We were told this place has good food and it does - probably 7/10. But the service was disappointing - we asked for chips & salsa to start and they somehow brought the mains out first - and at $50 for 2 average sized Mexican mains I think it's very expensive for what you get.

“Best Mexican outside cbd”
Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

Went here with my girlfriend for a quiet midweek meal based on reviews.
I wasn't disappointed. The service and atmosphere were excellent. So friendly. But I did make the mistake of ordering every thing at once and no one corrected me. So I had quite a few tapas to deal with at one time. I managed very well though. Really tasty and the sangria was very good too.
Definitely recommend

“Nothing Special”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We ate at Maya tonight and it was ok but nothing special. The service was fantatic, attentive and friendly. Mexican is really taking off as the 'in vogue' cuisine. There is really 3 kinds of mexican, tex mex which is the american version, the taco box kits bought in supermarkets here and real mexican. This place sits between tex mex and the el toro kits. The prices are good though, not expensive.

We tried 3 tapas. A chorizo dish covered in cheese and baked with capsicum and zucchini. If you closed your eyes and ate this you would swear it was a cheap pizza. There was nothing mexican about the flavour. The second was a chicken ribs in a choptle cream sauce. The chicken ribs were great with a charred flavour but the chipotle sauce needed to be reduced more to enliven the flavour. The third was a prawn dish with salsa verde. This was the best dish of the night. Prawns were perfectly cooked and the salsa verde jumped and sang on the pallet, like good mexican does.

We then had a duck quesadilla with hoisin sauce, yep hoisin sauce. Seriously mexican has some of the most vibrant flavoursome sauces in the world so why use an asian one? Tjis could have been so much more. We also had the pork taco which also was bland.

We really wanted to like this place and the concept is great as is the service. The food needs work to be bought up to the standard of flavour and the zing associated with really good mexican.
