Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer.

Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The superbly organic acoustics of the hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat space that can also act as a companion room to the hall. Comprising a series of diffusing timber panels with tessellated plywood faces tipped in and out to form a modulated wall and ceiling, Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No. 2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. Swing by, say hello and book tickets to a show. Discover why Melbourne Recital Centre is the Best Place to Hear beautiful music.

“Lovely venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

This is a wonderful addition to Melbourne's cultural scene. The acoustics in the main auditorium are excellent and the timber finishes everywhere are so representative of our country. It is a very versatile venue with a smaller area for more casual entertainment which suits more intimate performances.

“Lovely new venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is a great new venue, it s also known as the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch recital centre, ( whom I had the pleasure to meet once) the acoustics are state of the art and the woodwork is amazing considering we are not in a third world country where buildings such as these cost so much less to build

“A must for any music lover”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

My son asked me to join him to see Chris Botti.....who said I....what on a Sunday evening.....oh well, good value........so I walked along and sat down......then started looking around and I was amazed to see the stunning design.......as a few sounds appeared my ears and eyes were suddenly focused on this brilliant trumpet player, wow I thought, who is this.......oh well 2 hours later I was hoping it would never end, the sound, the hall was just a brilliant combination of beauty in design and in quality of music! I am now a fan......of both places.......what's up next!!

“Beautiful venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

I always love attending the Melbourne Recital centre. Perfect for international or interstate friends to show them a good time. I suggest booking a small or chamber ensemble as it is designed to bring out these sounds perfectly. Baroque music is stunning in this venue.

“Wonderful sound & ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2013

Went to see Glen Hansard in concert, terrific. Very impressed with the architecture of the building, the interior use of wood is beautiful, and the acoustics are excellent. The windows include louvres, and even the odd-shaped windows were open to let in the fresh air to the foyer area. Wonderful new venue, a great addition to Melbourne's arts precinct. I'd love to go back to hear a chamber otchestra.
