Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer.

Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The superbly organic acoustics of the hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat space that can also act as a companion room to the hall. Comprising a series of diffusing timber panels with tessellated plywood faces tipped in and out to form a modulated wall and ceiling, Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No. 2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. Swing by, say hello and book tickets to a show. Discover why Melbourne Recital Centre is the Best Place to Hear beautiful music.

“We have become addicted to the Recital Centre!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Acoustics are so good at the Melbourne recital that my partner and I have become almost compelled to go to concerts there. In the past ten months we attended 18 concerts - some in the larger area, the Dame Elizabeth Auditorium, and others in the Salon, which seats about 150 people. Both have excellent sound qualities.

Many of the concerts were part of the 'Local Heroes' program, which (surprise, surprise!) presents the works of Victorian based ensembles. Prices for these concerts are affordable at $35 /$25 per person, and the artists are remarkably good.

The diversity of the program caters for all tastes in music. We are so lucky to have the Melbourne Recital Centre in our lovely city.
