“Amazing musical venue”

Melbourne Recital Centre

Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer. Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The superbly organic acoustics of the hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat space that can also act as a companion room to the hall. Comprising a series of diffusing timber panels with tessellated plywood faces tipped in and out to form a modulated wall and ceiling, Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No. 2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. Swing by, say hello and book tickets to a show. Discover why Melbourne Recital Centre is the Best Place to Hear beautiful music.

Our first concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre will not be our last! It was a sublime venue where every sound was perfectly captured, and every seat had received the benefit of that. A beautiful contempory space but suited to a wide variety of artists (which the forthcoming program is showcasing) - there is something there for music lovers of all persuasions.

This venue has been designed to ensure the acoustics do not interfere with the music, what they play is what you hear. And there's leg room.

Striking exterior gives way to intriguing interior. A must visit venue for lovers of music.

We have been here many times and are always blown away by the sound and the visual beauty of the venue. Music is varied but always good. There is a restaurant nearby which we haven't tried as they don't accept bookings for 2 people and it's too far from anything else to have to go back to Fed Square or Sth Bank. There is a bar at the Recital Centre which is usually well staffed and quick to get a drink from.

I've been to a couple of very different performances at the Recital Centre this year - Angelique Kidjo and a performance of Mozart's Requeim. The seating and layout are great and the acoustics are brilliant! I wish I could afford to go there more often.

Great acoustics and visually beautiful. Conveniently located if using public transport, otherwise parking nearby is expensive.
