“Clean close to cbd”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

Spent a week at the apartments found it was all i needed nice view clean fitted with everything one would need .air conditioner needs a rocket science abilty to set it only drawback. Tram outside door to cbd 10 min. casiono over the road if you are that way inclined, security very good. would stay there again.

Room Tip: Grab a tram to melbourns best market or a 15 min walk (south melbourne markets)

Stayed 3 nights at Melbourne Short Stay Apartments Southbank Deluxe, in a 3 bedroom suite on the 18th floor.

This review is based on the apartments self-marketing as "Deluxe" and "4.5 stars", and charging $600/night, hence the picky criticisms below and the rating of "average" - it's nice, but could be better for the price.

The apartments are very conveniently located for the Convention Centre or Crown. Spacious rooms, comfortable beds, good views up the river through the double glazed windows without any disturbance from outside noise. Overall the apartment was well appointed, but missing the details that would make it earn the "deluxe" in it's name. The apartment was clean, and contrary to our expectation was serviced daily [housekeeping were friendly and thorough].

A $20/night hostel would get slammed for not providing free unlimited wifi, so the fact a $600/night "deluxe" hotel wants to charge $10/day for it is outrageous. Foxtel is provided - but only the most basic subscription, and there is no access to pay-per-view or any of the missing channels. VOIP telephony is available, at marked-up landline prices (e.g. 49c for a local call) - if you have any sense, you'll just use your mobile!
Poking out from behind the TV cabinet was a big ball of tangled cables.

While everything was clean, the apartment needed some routine maintenance & sprucing up. There were plenty of scuffs in the paintwork, a few damaged bits of carpet, partially blocked sink in the ensuite bathroom, and mould in the inaccessible crevices in the shower cubicles.

Signage and information are generally poor. The pool and gym are to be found on a terrace on level 7; it took some digging to find this buried a couple of pages into the hotel information booklet. There are no labels in the lifts, or signs on the corridor walls as you exit the lifts, so once you reach the floor you want, you need to go exploring.

The pool is in an enclosed glass box on the terrace, and both water and air temperature were nice and warm on what was a cold 8 degree day outside. The view over the river would be good, but the glass hadn't been cleaned in some time. There are no change rooms by the poolside, only a single toilet/shower room. There was only one other family at the pool when we visited, but in a building with 30 floors I can imagine this being a major bottleneck in busier times! I didn't use the gym, it seemed to have 3 or 4 treadmills and steppers and a few weight machines and bikes - maybe 12-15 pieces of equipment? Not too bad.

The kitchen was top-quality on installation [Miele appliances, stone benchtop, 2-pack enamel doors, integrated fridge, underbench sink], and had enough knives, pots & pans etc to cook a proper meal. Unfortunately the doors were out of alignment, and the dishwasher had lost the spring in it's door, so as soon as you press the latch the door falls open and whacks you in the shins. The fridge looked sparkling clean, but smelled like fish. The only garbage bin was a large ugly plastic swing-top bin, which had to sit on the kitchen bench as there was no other space for it.

There were aircon controls in each room, but they didn't seem to do very much; temperature was set at 26 degrees when we arrived, we opened the windows as it was taking a long time to cool down.

There is one very small desk in the apartment, located between the open-plan kitchen and the big-screen TV; probably not conducive to getting any work done.

We booked directly and pre-paid the room months in advance, but they seemed unwilling/unable to produce a tax invoice prior to our stay. Eventually they emailed a scanned copy of an invoice on which the payment date had been hand-written. "Reception" is a single desk in a shared office in the building next door. After 8pm, the 'concierge' is a security guard who provides no other service but handing over the keys. They can do left-luggage until 8pm.

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights and found the unit to be exceptionally clean and tidy. The staff were friendly and the location was just a stones throw away from crown casino. A little bit of street noise however it was totally acceptable considering the location. My partner and I would definitely stay here again when in Melbourne...

Melbourne Short Stay Apartments Southbank Deluxe - Stayed October 2013

Was the room clean - Yes it was spotless.

Was the bed comfortable - Queen size bed and it was very comfortable

Was the environment quiet - The apartments are on Whiteman St, near the Casino There was noise from the trams, but did not keep us awake.

Location - This was our first stay in Short Stay Apartments, There is a tram stop right outside the door on Whiteman st which had routes 96 & 109 into the city. On the nearest corner, there is also another tram stop, which also goes into the city. It would be a 25 minute walk to Bourke St Mall.

The staff - All staff were helpful and friendly. No complaints there.

General information - The apartment was clean and comfortable. It was close to the Casino and South bank promenade, which gave you many options for dining and entertainment. The booklet in the apartment for the oven was not in English, so it was very hard to use.

If you don't mind the 25 minute walk to the CBD, this place is all you need.

Exactly what we wanted, modern, spacious, surprisingly quiet, nice views, close to excellent restaurants, close to transport, good value, grocery store and bottle shop around the corner. We will be back next year for the Australian Grand Prix 2014.

Room Tip: Proximity to Southbank and the restaurants was exactly what we were looking for.

Pleasantly surprised with Melbourne Short Stay Apartments Southbank Deluxe, close proximity to Crown Casino, public transport and only a short walk to the city.
The staff were very helpful and accommodating.
Our one bedroom apartment was clean, spacious and the price was very reasonable, I would recommend this accommodation, if you don't mind your room not being serviced daily - we didn't.
I will definitely be returning.

Modern and spacious apartment. Convenient if needing to be close to the Convention Centre, but also has a tram stop directly across the road which will take you straight into Bourke Street Mall. Our apartment was starting to show wear and we were disappointed with the cleanliness of the apartment - the towels had lots of hairs through them. Good apartment, but probably wouldn't stay again.
