Being our first time to Melbourne, my partner and I decided to change hotels halfway through our trip for a bit of variety, this being the second hotel we stayed at.

The hotel itself was amazing. We didn't realize just how many floors it had and were shocked when we got our room on the 22nd floor. The view was breathtaking and I purposefully slept with the curtains open some nights so that I could look out onto the city first thing in the morning, it really was amazing. The room had everything we needed and was quite spacious.
It was great to have the pool, gym and sauna located on the first floor especially considering it was 39degrees one day were there. It gave us the opportunity to stay out of the heat but still have things to occupy us during the day. All of the staff were really friendly from check-in to check out - a blonde lady at the reception was even kind enough to offer to print our boarding passes out at the reception as the normal printer and computer for guests to use was occupied by another guest at the time -rather than us have to wait or come back at a later time to use the guest computer.
The location we found to be good - was close to Chinatown and the greek district and there was a great cafe just next door and an awesome ice-cream/crepe shop just down the road too. It seemed to almost be in an awkward position compared to other places though. To get to say the Victoria markets or museum, it was just that little bit too far to walk for us especially in the heat or when carrying bags of things purchased from the markets, but by the time we would walk to the city circle tram it seemed almost pointless to get the tram to go only a couple of stops, often having to wait a long time because the trams were completely full. In saying that there was plenty of choice for food that was all within a close walking distance so the location in regards to this was very good.

The only thing that let us down a little was housekeeping. We returned one day at about 4 and the room had still not be serviced. We wanted to just rest for a bit before heading out that night but we needed new towels (the airconditioning on kept our previous ones damp) and other amenities. I went looking for a housekeeper, just to see if we could get these things off the trolley. I waited around the corridor near a trolley for quite a while with another gentlemen that also had not had his room serviced and was after towels, but we could not find anyone. I would assume that they were busy that day, but when I came out again to look for them later, as still no one had come to the room, there was a group just standing in the hallway chatting.
Also, within the 5 day period out rubbish was never emptied (something I would think they would do?) as I could not find a rubbish chute or a larger bin, or any information of where to find one to get rid of it ourselves. We ended up filling the cupboard and quite a few plastic bags that we had to leave on the bench. We would have told reception but kept thinking 'they'll empty it tomorrow'.

The shower was also a bit funny. It was extremely level, with a gap under the swinging glass door and nothing stopped the water from coming out of the initial shower area into the rest of the bathroom area. My partner ended up accidentally flooding the whole bathroom area and onto the carpeted area because there was just nothing to stop the water from flowing out. Design fault, so not much the hotel itself can do now but I wondered whether it happened to other people too, something we could have been told to keep an eye on?

Despite that however we had a great stay and would definitely consider staying at this hotel again.

Dear Bens_1220

Firstly, thank you for choosing to stay with us at Citadines on Bourke Melbourne. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay with us, enjoying your view and the hotel facilities; however it is a sincere concern of mine to read about your housekeeping experiences.

Please understand that I will be investigating and reviewing how and why this happened. Every guest room is serviced daily from Monday to Saturday and it is reasonable to expect your room to be serviced within an appropriate time of the day.

In regards to your guest bathroom, I acknowledge there are isolated design concerns; we as a hotel are looking into a long term solution to assist in rectifying such issues.

It is a disappointment that this has distracted from your overall stay with us; but thank you for your time in providing such feedback.

We would gladly welcome you back and would trust the stay would be enjoyable.

Kind regards

I recently stayed in a studio executive apartment on the 22nd floor of this hotel, and was quite impressed. The hotel is new and in excellent condition, my room had a great view and was very quiet (almost no street noise, despite being in the very centre of Melbourne) and the small kitchen was functional. I traveled by myself for work and found that the bathroom arrangements worked well, though as other reviewers have noted they're a bit unconventional. The hotel's location is also excellent - trams pass by the front door every five minutes or so, and it takes only about 5 minutes to walk to Burke Street Mall and the cinemas on Collins Street (Federation Square is 10-15 minutes away). All up, I'd stay here again and recommend it strongly.

That said, the hotel does have some flaws. The most annoying of these is the overpriced internet: while I stayed in several Citadines in France and the UK last year which provided in-room wifi for 'free' as part of the base room rate, this hotel charges $6 an hour or $14 a day for access to the internet services in rooms or the foyer. This is likely to be much more expensive than the cost of providing this service, and seems a rip-off (especially for a not-cheap hotel targeted at business travelers). While a less significant issue, the decision to purchase toasters which sound an alarm when the bread is cooked seems ill-advised; on my first morning in the hotel I thought I'd set off the building's fire alarm! (people intending to buy rather than make breakfast should note that the hotel breakfast buffet is absurdly over-priced, and nicer alternatives are available for half the price if you're prepared to walk a block or two). I also found the non-opening windows to be annoying, though the air conditioning was efficient and quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view on the upper levels

Dear BandLG

I am delighted you chose to stay with us at Citadines on Bourke Melbourne. It pleases me that you took advantage of using your in-room kitchenette and thank you for your comments about the comfortable bedding and of the helpful Guest Service team. The fact you were assigned a room on a higher floor for improved noise comfort is even better.

I have investigated in regards to your feedback and the lack of range hood and bathroom exhaust. I have been assured there is a rangehood and bathroom exhaust in every guest room, due to the design of the bathroom, it may appear more recessed than expected, and the kitchen rangehood is in place.

In regards to the shower design, the door itself opens inwards in every guest room due to the design of the bathroom, but I acknowledge your comments and have discussed them with the team accordingly. The toiletries provided in the bathroom have been designed with the dispenser concept as a ‘green’ initiative to help reduce the environmental impact of excessive packaging and unnecessary waste, whilst still providing our guests with a hotel quality body cleanser.

We of course would gladly accommodate you when you are next in Melbourne.

Kind regards

Sale fare on room made this terrific value....not too glitzy & glamorous, but comfortable, modern & clean...still feels new.

Less than 5 minute stroll to the Bourke St Mall, 15-20 mins to Soouthbank, Rod Laver Arena etc.

Would stay here again 4 sure.

Location gold!

Room Tip: Stayed here twice - small double & apartment, both modern rooms. Very nice!

Stayed here for 3 nights over a weekend in a 2 bed apt with 3 other friends , bedrooms tiny , lounge area tiny like an office waiting room with only one uncomfortable sofa for 2 and a swivel office chair to use whilst relaxing. We had to take turns of one person to sit on the ground with 2 cushions when watching TV or listening to music. As a previous reviewers mentioned no room cleaning on Sunday and overpriced.

Room Tip: Dont expect to be comfy in a 2 bed if ther are 4 of you

We got a deal on a last minute website for a Studio Executive Apartment for 5 nights at a good rate, and made a special request for a room higher up in the hotel if possible. They gave us a room on Level 21 (out of 22 levels), so we were happy.

THE ROOM: The studio apartment was very clean, but very small, but then again, that's what 'studio' implies anyway. The kitchenette is about 1.5m long, along the wall as soon as you walk into the room. It is well-equipped with a small fridge, microwave-oven, dishwasher, stove top (but no rangehood fan!) and big sink. Not much cupboard space for food, and limited bench space. The queen bed was comfy, the TV was a good size, and unfortunately the views were just of other buildings.

THE BATHROOM: The bathroom was spotlessly clean, but quite pokey and poorly laid out, in our view. As others have said, the bathroom sink is outside the small bathroom, which contains only a big shower, toilet and some towel rails. There was no exhaust fan for the bathroom, so if you like your privacy in the bathroom, put the TV up before you go in! The odd thing is the shower is big but the door opens right at the shower faucet, i.e. to turn on the shower you have to reach across to the far wall with your arm underneath the shower faucet, or you have to get into the shower first and get cold while you wait for the water to get hot - why?! If they turned the door upside down and put the hinges on the opposite side, this would have made absolutely no difference to the bathroom layout, but would mean you could start the shower without getting wet! Anyway, aside from the layout issue, the shower had good pressure and was clean. There were no little soaps, shampoos or conditioners like in a 4-5 star hotel, but instead there was a soap pump at the bathroom sink and a "hair and body soap" pump in the shower. We are noticing this is becoming more common when we stay in 4 star accommodation, but we don't like it! I'm sure it's far more economical for the hotels just to refill soap pumps, though.

HOUSE-KEEPING: The house-keeping was daily (except Sundays & public holidays) and satisfactory.

NOISE: We couldn't hear any noise from the corridor, the lifts, adjacent rooms or from the street (but then again, we were on Level 21). Perfect.

CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT: Check-in was smooth & quick. There was a line to check-out so it took a little longer, but the staff were very helpful & friendly. They stored our bags securely for us all day when we checked-out.

PARKING: We didn't have any problem getting a space in the car park downstairs each day, but it was tricky just generally finding out how to park your car prior to check-in (see below). Paying $30 per day is actually standard for city hotels in Australia (we've paid that, or more, at some of the best hotels in Sydney, too). The fee is $30 per day, regardless of how often you come and go from the car park, as opposed to local parking stations which will charge you every time you come and go from the parking station.

FINDING THE HOTEL WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVE: The main hotel entrance (on foot) is on Bourke St, however the carpark entrance is on Little Collins St. This is confusing, because adjacent to the hotel entrance on Bourke St is another parking station not associated with Citadines, and we nearly drove into it when we first arrived. My husband dropped me off to run inside to reception & ask where to park our car, and then we drove our car around a couple of blocks to get to Little Collins St (a small, one-way street) to find the correct car park entrance. Note: there are lots of car park entrances in this part of Little Collins St, but the car park for Citadines has a purple sign above it with the hotel name ... but it's not visible until you get closer to the car park entrance! Confusing! Once you're in the hotel, it all makes more sense, but first arriving by car was confusing for us!

LOCATION: Perfect. Central and not far away from anything in the city, really. There's a tram stop right outside, it's only a couple of blocks walk to Federation Square and only a couple of blocks walk to the free city circle tram which will take you down to Queen Victoria Market, Docklands, and many other city destinations. It's right near Chinatown, Bourke St Mall, and Swanston St. There's a big Woolies supermarket inside the QV Building, located a couple of blocks away and it's open late.

SUMMARY: We would stay here again if we got a last minute deal again, however if we found a comparable deal at a comparable hotel in a similar location we might think about trying a different place, but Citadines really is in such a great location, with clean rooms & friendly staff so we would be happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: We found out that other guests with cars had gone straight to Little Collins St on their arrival and...

We stayed in this hotel from 9.6.12 to 12.6.12.Location of the hotel is nice. The entry to this hotel is on the road with a tramway, but the rooms are in the interiors. As a result, from these rooms, the hotel looks to be surrounded by the buildings The rooms are large and well furnished. The breakfast was so so. We got Indian food in Flora Restaurant and Gaylord Restaurant which are near to this hotel. However, the housekeeping in this hotel was the worst. On 10th June,2012 no one came to clean the rooms, change the bed sheets etc. The reason they told was that it was Sunday. Even on the next day, that is, on the 11th June, 2012, no room cleaning was done because it was the Queen's birthday. I think House keeping in this Hotel requires lots of improvement. The management must take care to provide all the services including cleaning of the Guests' rooms on all days including Sundays and Public Holidays. Hotels are mostly visited by guests on Sundays and Public Holidays, and this was the first time we heard such excuses!.

Room Tip: No room is well ventilated. No cleaning of rooms done in this hotel on Sundays and Public Holidays...
