“Metropol vs Promenade ..... who wins?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

We have stayed @ Promenade many times in the past few years but decided to give Metropol a go, having read so many good reviews on this site. Our arrival was greeted warmly by ?Luke & bags were taken up to the room. The room was on the 25th floor with city views - as requested for a birthday celebration - with a complimentary bottle of wine in an ice bucket & Lindt chocs but the city view unfortunately included a car park. The room itself was nice with a very comfortable bed but 4 extremely soft pillows that felt like they disintegrated when laid upon. The bathroom is a slightly strange arrangement with an Asian style slider to close-off from the main room which doesn't completely allow privacy. A fine arrangement for long married couples such as ourselves but I would think if you are in a newer relationship - could be a bit embarrassing! The shower is a good size but smaller than those @ Promenade - as they have utilised the extra space for a separate toilet - ours also had a missing door stop, so that the shower door banged on the glass of the separate toilet. Tiles in the shower were also mouldy in the grouting. The area around the sink was dirty in the corners with built-up grime plus the main room itself was dusty, dirty with food debris (we ate out) and the bed base had holes/rips in it. In saying all that - it was quite a nice room that was a little tired & let down by bad house-keeping (soap was not replenished at all & we had to ask). We ate at The Hive Kitchen & Bar and had nice leisurely breakfasts with good service - in saying that we ate after 10am each day & overheard a small group of older ladies complaining very loudly that they had waited 1 hour for their food. On the second day of our three day stay we approached reception to ask if we could have newspapers delivered - this particular staff member was unfriendly ?Michelle & very dismissive although newspapers were then delivered as requested. We used the pool every morning which is a very nice area although ?slightly smaller than Promenade's pool. Also the gym has a nice city view & the wet sauna & vitality pools in the changing rooms are superb. Whilst the review may seem harsh, it is an honest comparison & we did very much enjoy our stay & have to agree wholeheartedly with the review re parking - the valet parking crew are lovely with a refreshing welcoming attitude for everyone. To retrieve our bags however was a bit of a mish-mash & we were advised to go into the holding room & 'just grab our bags' - good job we are honest as we could have taken anything which wasn't checked! For the amount paid - in both hotels - we would suggest Promenade but maybe we were unlucky & the most disappointing thing was that we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay & neither were there any customer satisfaction forms to be filled in. Perhaps management would like to comment?

Room Tip: As for a higher floor but without the car park view!

We stayed for one night at Crown Metropol because we were going on the Melbourne Tramcar Restaurant, it could have not been more convenient we just had to walk across the road. The room on the 22nd floor was great with a fantastic view and we found the staff very helpfull. The only critisim we could have was we thought the breakfast at the Mister Hive Restaurant at $38.50 a head was a bit steep, but Crown has a Mc Donalds that cost us $7.50 a head. we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

I stayed here for a business trip and found the location to be perfect and easily walking distance within most restaurants and shops. The breakfast buffet was great but at other meals I definitely recommend eating outside the hotel. The only other thing that was slightly annoying was you could not use your key card to get between floors and when traveling with a large group I found it very irritating to always have to meet in the lobby.

I stayed at the Metropol for three nights over a weekend. I drove my very large, muddy, 4x4 ute into the driveway to be valet parked and was greeted with the same brilliant service the guests driving BMW's and Audi's received, this made me VERY happy to start with. I was dressed messily, had been driving a long time so looked a little worse for ware and at no time was I treated with anything but the greatest respect, something that doesn't always happen at higher priced venues. The check in was smooth and the service friendly. All my bags were taken to my room for me without even needing to request this service. Every staff member I came across on my stay was friendly, engaging, helpful and efficient. The room was beautiful and well serviced and the little touches within the room like toiletries etc. made the experience even better. The pool and spa are a must when visiting with sweeping views of the city and the water was a perfect temperature. I would definitely recommend Crown Metropol for any occasion.

this is a fabulous, clean, sharp, modern and quality hotel. The rooms are a good size with very comfortable beds. the only criticism would be the light switching is not easy to control with several options an switch points without a master switch that I could find.
The pool is terrific and worth a swim when you stay. the upstairs bar on the 28th floor is truly worth a visit also with spectacular panoramic views of the city.
I visited the restaurant for breakfast and it as almost café style quality for a buffet spread (I usually hate buffet) and they also provided a proper quality coffee at no extra charge instead of the often provided brewed crap others provide with a charge for real coffee.
Staff were very friendly and everything was neat and in its place.
Valet parking is expensive but you can park in the casino if this is a concern.
Depending on why you're staying in Melbourne, this hotel is a good choice. If you're dining or visiting the casino - stay here. If you are looking at shows etc. in the city I'd stay somewhere closer.
Generally speaking this hotel shouldn't disappoint many visitors

Stayed twice during March, the staff are very helpful with great customer skills.
The hotel entrance is okay but it is very business driven, so the appearance is a bit stiff.
The rooms were nice with amazing views. Very clean rooms, nice amenities. Ipod connection!.
I found the light and phone system a bit complicated. Actually I was unable to work out the phone so I just use my own to call front desk.
Location is good, it is possible to cross to the Casino/shops etc without need to go outside of the hotel, there is a bridge connection between hotel and casino/shops/restaurants etc.

If you wish to catch public transport to the city centre, there is a tram stop on the corner just few metres away. Just remember that you need a myki which you can not buy in the tram.

Room Tip: Try to get a corner room with views towards the city

I stayed in this hotel with two friends during the past weekend. It was an excellent choice. Rooms are spotless, service is friendly and professional and the location is great. You can walk to heaps of restaurants and shops. My only regret was that we didn't have long enough and should we return, will definitely stay there again.
