I went specifically to see the display of Ned Kelly's armour. It was really impressive to see. I was surprised to find everything else on display there just as interesting! Definitely worth a visit, especially if the weather is inclement, and you want a place inside in the warm for an hour or so.

It is the best location to stop, sit down and surf the net. However, avoid those tourists who chats in foreign languages with their iPad thinking there is no one around. Avoid going there during lunch break with hundreds of students and staff from the surrounding RMIT and UoM. They do have a bag size limit if you enter the library proper and you may need to pay to hire a locker if it's oversized.

an impressive building - stands proud along the streetscape - inside was wonderful - a worthwhile visit if staying for a few days

Central location on Swanston street with 30mins free wifi and printing and lots of literature but you have to do all your reading on sight as you can't actually borrow the books.
A popular place to meet people though out on the steps. Worth stopping by if just for a few photos.

This is a huge, beautiful old Victorian building, with millions of books and historic documents publicly available. You will need a readers ticket to take advantage of it. There are banks of computers also, with free access to the internet. It is always very busy, and the signage is quite poor. Access for disabled is good. The staff are typical library stuff - mostly humourless and intimidating. You need to have quite a good idea of what you are looking for if you are hoping to do some research - I do feel sorry for people who arrive without a clear idea of what exactly they are looking for. There are tours round the building running at regular intervals, which are fascinating - well worth it. There are always a few exhibitions which are well worth viewing too.
