Customer service was casual, bordering on indifferent - if you are on the phone and/or computer for 5 minutes with no one else checking in or out then you could at least acknowledge customers with eye contact or a brief "I'll be with you in a minute..."etc.
Given a room immediately behind the lifts but there was absolutely no noise from them or from people using them, in fact the hotel was very quiet for a city hotel which is a big plus.
Room clean & good size, it's a travelodge so no-one should have big expectations for a plush/huge room. Bed firm/hard but comfortable. Good flat-screen t.v. with usual free channels, some cable stations& pay per view movies.
Area is surrounded by offices so a bit desolate returning at night, but quite safe.
Tram stop handy in Collins st.(Route 48) where there is both stair and lift access from aurora lne.
There are cafes at Collins st ,food courts at both southern cross and DFO also a supermarket and a 24hr 7/11,so I don't know why people have commented there is no food nearby!
Very handy to Southern Cross , D.F.O., Etihad Stadium, 15 min walk or short tram ride from Spencer St. to Crown Casino(if that's your cup of tea) or Exhibition Centre.
Overall I would use again if I got a good rate as I did on this stay.

We payed $229 (aust) a night for this hotel which was supposedly an opening special rate. There was nothing special about it, because we payed so much I was expecting more. The bathroom was set up for disabled so was quite large but just didn't make sence because the bedroom was tiny and there would be no way a wheel chair could fit down either side of the bed.
We only had 1 blanket in the room and had to call for an extra one. The shower flooded the bathroom and no bathmat was provided, when i asked for one we were given a handtowel not a bathmat.
Breakfast (which was included in our package) was dismal and looked nothing like the advertised pictures. For those paying you can get a cafe cooked full breakfast for less than what they charge.
The lifts in the hotel took a long time in the mornings (up to 20min) partly because the cleaning staff were also using them. Noone could tell us where the stairs were as an alternative route so we're just lucky there wasn't a fire.
Their are much better alternatives in Melbourne CBD, don't stay here.

We too were evacuated, morning March 14, a week after the other TA members as written below. Is this the price you pay for the honeymoon rates? Apparently someone left a donut in the microwave. We are a couple involved with public safety so understood at first. We queued up patiently for ages to give some feedback, for which the stressed staff were less than grateful, in fact their cynical comments made us wonder if they had been ever been briefed. No apologies, no explanations. People had panicked on our floor as the door next to the lifts, which they wrongly assumed was the fire exit, was locked and unmarked. No marshalling, no return to building after false alarm announcement. Travelodge needs a consultant to get evacuation procedures correct , and a decent alarm system. Stop wasting valuable time and resources.

At the moment is only just better than a footy fan hole in the wall. No parking, pay nearby if lucky. Miniature bathroom with door hitting toilet behind it, small claustrophobic rooms. basic, basic. Okay bed. Terse and overworked staff. The reception area is nothing like the photo, small, crowded, ugly, long check in times, there is no bar or bistro-breakfast room only. We are not paying to be guinea pigs. Good luck Travelodge, you're going to need it.

This is still the first month of operation and some teething problems are evident, some in control of Travelodge and some not. The location is really tricky with GPS directions as confusing as the ambiguous signage. There is serious construction happening in the Aurora lane which is half one way and half two way. There is no hotel parking but a Wilson's car park is right next door at $27 per 24 hours with one exit only or $6 overnight as long as you take the car out by 6am and presuming there actually is space on the evening (we lucked in one evening and missed another) We then chanced street parking which is a bit chaotic and not well lit.

The location is only about 2 or 3 mins walk to Etihad stadium and Southern Cross Station. However that is it!!! It is not close to the theatre district, shopping or cafes. There is an IGA supermarket about 3 mins away and a breakfast cafe. The travelodge has a breakfast room but we didn't use it; it has no ambience and looks like a boarding school refractory. The breakfast smells were enticing but we can't comment on the food. There's a brochure for room service which is actually a ring out and delivery service. The food was ok and service fairly prompt (40 mins).

Because the hotel is new, the room we had was very clean and fresh: basic but had a microwave and some crockery and cutlery which we weren't expecting and was an added bonus. Wine glasses would have been welcome. I guess we had a "disabled" room as the bathroom was large. There is a desk and two chairs but no other sitting area. We only paid a budget price for our room and felt it was fine for the price we paid.

Teething problems were evident in the reception area. It was absolutely full to overflowing several times with groups arriving and leaving. There seemed to be more people behind the desk checking in than computer terminals and they certainly were not particularly well informed about the area. There are single chairs scattered all over the foyer and only one lounge: looked again like a gymnasium foyer rather than a welcoming home away from home or comfortable place to wait for a cab. I don't judge a hotel by it's foyer but this screams budget as soon as you walk in the doors and see all the random chairs, cushions everywhere and too long curtains. Noone seemed to care that is was in disarray and we arrived back several times when there wasn't a crowd and it looked awful. It is obviously not the job of the desk staff to straighten it out.

I couldn't fault the cleaning of the rooms or the timing of it as an earlier writer did. However there are still no signs on the back of doors re exits, so any emergency alarms for evacuation would be chaos.

Overall I would only recommend this hotel to anyone who just wanted a place to sleep, clean and fresh and close to the stadium or station.

As with the previous post I was also involved in the evacuation of Travelodge Docklands on 6th March. It was really badly handled. No emergency evacuation procedures on the back of the door or any where in the room also none near the lift or stairwell. There was no communication from staff and when I questioned the duty manager he didn't seem very concerned. Thank goodness it was just a false alarm. I have spoken to Travelodge about this and they assure me they will remedy the situation.

Apart from that drama, the hotel is new so everything is clean and nice. We stayed in standard King room. Quite small but comfortable. The bathroom is compact and the shower is small. No hand towel supplied and only shampoo no conditioner

When we returned to the hotel at 3.00 pm after having been out since 8.30am out room had not been serviced. The poor housekeeping staff were very apologetic and obviously run off their feet.

The entrance to the hotel is quite hard to find in an out of the way area. There is no guest parking but there is a parking station next door that you need to pay for. On the weekend there were no cafes open nearby and I found that end of the city quite lifeless. There is lots on construction going on in the surrounding streets so during the week it could be quite noisy but on the weekend it was very quiet. Once this area is developed I think there will be more cafes etc.

However if you are going to Ethiad stadium it is literally a 3 minute walk away and you can walk to the hotel from Southern Cross station but there are lots of stairs to negotiate .

The Travelodge Docklands for us was just ok, hopefully it will improve with age.

While the room was fantastic for the two nights I stayed there, this morning, day I was checking out, there was an announcement to leave the building. I was on the 13th floor and there we NO fire exit signs and the stair doors were locked. Another guest and I went down on the lift together. There were no staff assisting with the evacuation. On hotels it is necessary to have a sign on doors about fire evacuations. There was none.

Upon checking out, another guest asked about the same thing about wanting to know what happened. A staff member said that one of the showers had too much steam in the bathroom and that's what set the smoke alarms off. Very disorganised if there was an emergency.
