“A novel place to stay, with many little extras to make it special”
Reviewed February 14, 2011

First impression:
It's very modern, the artworks and interior design are all brilliant.

The room:
A little on the tiny side, but still large enough for 2 people. The bathroom door is glass w/ a image etched into it, however it doesn't close flush with the wall which allows for steam to escape and any toilet activity is clearly heard in the room (can be a little distracting).

The room was fitted with a tiny kitchenette, which would suit most, and the bed was large. However it was on a spring base and not a full ensemble. The lighting in the room was a little dull at times. The room had a iPod/iPhone dock which was great especially if you forgot your charger!

The TV was a large flatscreen mounted on the wall (although it didn't get much use). A glass dining table was in the center of the room and was a good size. Two smaller chairs were positioned against the window these were a little uncomfortable - however not a big deal because the only time I used them was when I wanted to sit somewhere to put on my shoes.

Beware the spa bath, starting it up too soon can lead to a tsunami of water flooding your bathroom. I couldn't work out how to fill the bath so had to use the shower head, this steamed up the room quickly. Bathroom was very clean aside from that. There was some grout discoloration forming around the basin, so if the cleaners don't jump on that straight away it will quickly manifest itself into mould and then you might as well start thinking about a refurb.

Cleanliness:
Pillows looked brand new, sheets were nicely washed. Carpet had a few scuff marks, but on the whole was spotless. Balcony had some paint missing on the hand rails. Aside from that no issues at all.

Value:
A little expensive, given that it was only a studio room. Also the location isn't the most convenient you still have to allow time to catch a tram/cab into the city. However it could have been worse.

Service:
The staff on the front counter were very friendly and incredibly helpful. They were able to answer every question I threw at them, including some curve balls about where to find dinner after a show! Could have been more pleased with the counter staff.

Suggestions to management:
1) Make sure you don't drop the ball with the cleaning and maintenance, the Blackman is a wonderful hotel, and it would be a shame for it to become "just another hotel" in the city
2) Perhaps introduce a loyalty program. I asked at the counter and none was mentioned. I am personally 90% sure I would visit again, but with an incentive it would be a no-brainer!
3) Your post-11pm room service menu needs a little work. Microwavable meals are not good enough. Even a junior cook could throw together some fries and aioli! Or thieve a burger flipper from McDonalds down the road to cook up a couple of meat patties!

Conclusion:
Brilliant hotel, loved the experience!

Great, Great Hotel. Great Location, Rooms, Beds and the best restrauant we ate at on our whole trip. I guarantee this one. The staff is the best, close to everything. Absolutely no complaints, great hi tech rooms, all have kitchens, which we did not use because we ate out but if you want it, its there, microwave, stove, fridge etc.

We decided to try "The Blackman". What a fresh surprise!
Lovely staff, We arrived early, so, reception asked for our mobile number so they could call us as soon as room was ready. Superb room with first class amenities, and oh those prints!
Staff, quietly and casually professional to the max!
The added bonus was the dining options .Depot De Plain a French inspired deli for breakfast and lunch on one side of the foyer, and Classico Italian restaurant on the other.
The two eating options at "The Blackman "offer the very best deli selections at "Depot" and a limited but excellent menu at "Classico"
And, the Maitre' D's dont miss a thing!! Over four days, we only ate out twice.
Highly reccommend. David Ginn Lakes Entrance

1) Staff
KUKOS to the front desk staff Chris, Brandon, Chanelle and Amy who have truly impressed me with their passion and enthusiasm in making my stay @ The Blackman a memorable one. The guys are ever ready to go extra miles to keep that smile on your face. Chris honored his promise to give us a room which we both reckoned easily out-beat most 5 stars hotel we stayed in. Brandon helped me with the toll administration without qualms. Chanelle attended so promptly to my distressed call and didnt give up until i am all settled down. Amy made my morning by being just very very cheerful and attentive if i am a happy guest.
2) Room
The design of the hotel is ultra chic and contemporary. The furnishing are of high quality and the mattress/ pillows are of utmost top quality... so comfortable that we actually managed to sleep in past night...
3) Location
We drive and secured parking (under the hotel) is readily available and safe. Trams are at doorstep and i would say it is definitely worth the distance from the city heart considering the tranquility the guest can enjoy along st kilda road
4) The French Cafe below
Excellent coffee and the crossaint do live up to its reputation. V friendly staff as well.
The Blackman has delivered values beyond the monetary price we paid. Nothing but praise and will definitely go back with Blackman next time we are back in Melbourne ;)

I always look for new hotels on the block as they usually fresh and clean.....and The Blackman was no exception. Service was good, rooms very comfortable and reasonable size with a kitchenette in each. My adult daughters stayed in a slightly larger twin room with 2 queen beds which was excellent for them. Pillows were not quite to our liking, but they were soon replaced on request. With Patisserie and seperate restaurant/bar dowstairs and tram stop into the city or St Kilda only 50 metres away, we found it a very convenient place to stay for our travels into Rod Laver arena.
Highly recommend a trip to Brunswick street for breakfast at Marios, some great 'alternative' shopping and what looked like some interesting bars.

I spend half my life travelling with work and staying in hotels. The Blackman is the concept which more hotels need to be adapting. Very upmarket and a boutique style hotel. The rooms are very comfortable and extremely well appointed. Views over the albert park lake and port phillip bay a knock out! Me and my wife stayed in the hotel after our wedding. The staff ensured a stunning view suite and nice bottle of champagne on arrival together with a personal message greeting us. It's all about the little things and I must say The Blackman has it covered! Great job look forward to many more visits at your hotel.
