I have stayed at the other two Art Series hotels before (The Olsen and The Cullen), and I was wondering why The Blackman ranks the highest out of the three. So on one of the hottest weekends in Melbourne, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to try it, and now I know why. Whereas The Olsen tends to be too posh (for the A-listers) and The Cullen too avant-garde, The Blackman strikes a good balance between those qualities.
Location-wise, it is more a "calm refuge" than "party central", which could be a drawback to some people, but it was just what I needed. The Albert Park lake (great for a leisurely jog in the morning or afternoon) and sports centre are just a few minutes' walk away, whereas the CBD can be reached by a short tram ride. Or you can rent a bike from the hotel.
My room has a relaxing vibe and a beautiful view of the lake. The bed is very comfortable, and I like the lighting design. There are other nice touches such as the kitchenette and the funkily packaged bathroom amenities (they smell good, too). What's more, the minibar items and snacks are not exorbitantly priced, unlike some other hotels of this standing. Wi-Fi is still not free, though.
The gym's small and there's no pool (guests can use the pool at The Olsen but it's hardly worth the effort to go there), but in Melbourne this is not a must (Sydney hotels have better pools and gyms). I didn't get to try the Italian restaurant (Classico), but the coffee and French pastries at Depot du Pain were very good. The Blackman definitely has its charms, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.
