“The Blackman charms”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

I have stayed at the other two Art Series hotels before (The Olsen and The Cullen), and I was wondering why The Blackman ranks the highest out of the three. So on one of the hottest weekends in Melbourne, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to try it, and now I know why. Whereas The Olsen tends to be too posh (for the A-listers) and The Cullen too avant-garde, The Blackman strikes a good balance between those qualities.

Location-wise, it is more a "calm refuge" than "party central", which could be a drawback to some people, but it was just what I needed. The Albert Park lake (great for a leisurely jog in the morning or afternoon) and sports centre are just a few minutes' walk away, whereas the CBD can be reached by a short tram ride. Or you can rent a bike from the hotel.

My room has a relaxing vibe and a beautiful view of the lake. The bed is very comfortable, and I like the lighting design. There are other nice touches such as the kitchenette and the funkily packaged bathroom amenities (they smell good, too). What's more, the minibar items and snacks are not exorbitantly priced, unlike some other hotels of this standing. Wi-Fi is still not free, though.

The gym's small and there's no pool (guests can use the pool at The Olsen but it's hardly worth the effort to go there), but in Melbourne this is not a must (Sydney hotels have better pools and gyms). I didn't get to try the Italian restaurant (Classico), but the coffee and French pastries at Depot du Pain were very good. The Blackman definitely has its charms, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.

I spent a night at the Blackman and it was a lovely room. Perfect location to get around Melbourne, modern and clean rooms with large tub, comfy bed and balcony. I was however very annoyed with the price of my coffee - $8.80 for a small latte is ludicrous. I noticed that the internet and bottled water by the bedside were also expensive - perhaps I'm old fashioned but it annoys me to be charged for water and internet after paying for a room.
Dinner at the restaurant downstairs was very yummy, but again, expensive.

Thank you for taking the time to offer us your feedback. It is great to hear that you had a comfortable stay during your time in Melbourne. With reference to our expensive prices, we believe we are very competitive in comparison to other hotels and cafes. Our coffee price is $3.80 for a regular size (not $8.80), our water is $3 for a 600ml and all of our main meals are under $30 for both restaurant and in room dining. Internet is certainly an area that Art Series Hotels are looking at, and I would suggest that in the near future this will be a free service. We do believe in offering a premium product; however we do aim to make it accessible to the vast majority of the public and think that our prices are reflective of this. We look forward to seeing you again soon. We would encourage you to join our mailing list so you can keep an eye on our great specials coming up.

Being an Art Series fan, my husband and I stayed at The Blackman for a nights before our honeymoon. We stayed in a Bay Deluxe Studio Suite Balcony. Great artwork throughout the hotel. The room was very spacious, clean, had a great comfortable bed and all mod-cons and... a fantastic view of Albert Park and the bay!! Kitchenette, bathrobes, slippers and reasonable mini-bar prices.

Just a short distance from the CBD by tram.

Classico, the in-house restaurant, is fabulous. We chose to eat there (or get room service) every night and each meal was just as delicious. Highly recommend the gnocchi! The French café for coffee and pastries are a must.

Hotel and restaurant staff were very friendly.

Definitely recommend you stay here!

Room Tip: Get a room with the bay view.

Except it was $1000 for just the mattress!

Stayed here for 3 nights early January, room only. The rooms were new, modern, comfortable and spacious. It is unusual to get such quality hotels in Australia for a reasonable price. There is a small kitchenette which was great for breakfast in the mornings. The location is a short tram ride away from the major attractions. Staff were attentative. They have a fantastic policy where you can extend your check-out time until someone needs the room. Loved my stay here.

Note: Parking is $25 a day. Pricey but handy for coming in and out of the hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback following your stay at The Blackman. I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.

For future travellers, our check out promotion - that enabled you to stay in the room for as long as you like if the room was not booked - ended in mid-January. However we are very flexible with checkout times (depending how busy the hotel is).

We stayed in a Bay Deluxe Studio Suite Balcony for one night in February. The room was very spacious and clean, with a comfortable and firm bed plus a reasonable-sized bathroom. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the location is very convenient for trams into the CBD or to St. Kilda.

On the ground floor, there's a superb Italian restaurant (for which I'd suggest making an advance reservation as it probably only seats around 25-30 people) along with a nice patisserie / café.

If you join the hotel's loyalty scheme before making a reservation, you get a discount on your stay AND the card is good for a discount when eating at the restaurant (20% off, from memory).

No major downsides, although the bay view was slightly limited, and a fold-out suitcase stand would be useful if travelling with anything larger than a holdall.

We'd stay there again without having to think twice; recommended.

My partner and I spent ages online trying to find the nicest hotel for the best price and I think this place is it. It's about a 5-10 minute tram ride (we splurged and took taxis usually) down St Kilda Road from the CBD but so worth it. We joined Priority Guest Rewards (free) and got rooms for about $220 a night. It's new and really beautiful inside. My partner's an interior designer and loved it. We had stunning views looking out over the bay. Comfortable huge king bed (pillows were a bit soft), two balconies with table and chairs, nice bathroom and extras like bathrobes and slippers. Gym is tiny and we didn't see a pool but we were just in Melbourne to explore, shop and eat. Really tasty French café downstairs with great coffee. We didn't really interact much with the hotel staff but they seemed polite and fairly helpful. Definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a bay view room on a higher floor - stunning views!
