“Spacious rooms and super friendly staff”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

We stayed at The Blackman for one night for our wedding anniversary. We live in Melbourne but loved the experience of getting away and being tourists in our own town. It was our first night away from our newborn son and the staff went out of their way to make sure we had a lovely stay and a quiet room. I don't think we saw a single staff member during our stay who didn't smile, say hello and offer to help with anything we needed.
We stayed in a deluxe studio suite, which was spacious and had great views of the city. The bathroom is small but on the plus side it includes nice toiletries and a real hairdryer. Other highlights were a comfy bed and big balcony.
The location is great, not that we made it out for our planned run around the Botanic Gardens! Its great having a Depot de Pain downstairs for a sneaky pastry and coffee.
Pretty sure I contributed to one of the oddest lost property requests they've had too and reception were happy to help!

Room Tip: Ask to be up high to maximise the view

Thank you for telling us and others about your stay at The Blackman. We really appreciate knowing that you enjoyed your experience, especially being that it was your wedding anniversary. It always pleases me to know that our staff are friendly and giving the best service that they can, so thank you for mentioning this. I hope you got to try the almond croissants, they are very addictive. We look forward to seeing you soon, or if not, we hope you celebrate again with us next year.

What a lovely hotel.

Te rooms are quirky, with art in each (originals in the lobby) and quirky features and touches throughout.

We had a suite, and it was very spacious with two decent sized balconies. Although it wasn't a 'sea view' suite, we had a nice view over the golf course to the bay.

The restaurant and cafe on the ground flow are both very good, the staff are friendly and knowledgable, and numerous trams to the city and St Kilda are just a few steps away.

And good Melbourne accomodation is generally expensive - e Art Series Hotels are modest by comparison. Ral value, in this city.

Join the club when you ok, and get a decent discount for both the room, food, Internet...

Room Tip: The suites are HUGE! And the higher the floor, the better to view.

The Blackman is part art gallery and part hotel and a great place to spend a couple of nights in Melbourne.
The walls surrounding the smallish lobby are adorned with prints and bits and pieces and the theme continues throughout the hotel and into the rooms.
My room on the 2nd floor was a good size, one could say 'tastefully' outfitted and also included an outdoor patio, which unfortunately was wasted due to the Melbourne weather, and a small kitchenette. The selection of books in the room covering design and photography was a nice alternative to the tired tourist or shopping guide typically found in hotel rooms. Importantly however the room was immaculately clean and the bed very comfortable.
The Melbourne CBD is a short tram ride away and as the hotel sits on the edge of St Kilda Rd, you never have to wait long to catch a ride into town.
This is a fun hotel which has really strived to do something different and well worth trying out.

Pardon the pun, but you have really painted a nice picture of The Blackman. We have tried to tastefully celebrate the works of Charles Blackman, without making it too over the top. More importantly, we want our guests to be comfortable and it seems like this was the case for you. Although all of our rooms are great, please let us know when you are next staying and we will make sure you get a nice high room to experience the best views of Melbourne.

Absolutely loved the Blackman. The rooms are a great size with a balcony and full windows they are light and airy. the small kitchenette is great as well as a relay couch and table. The bathroom is without a tub but that was no problem as not travelling with children. The hotel has a fun and relaxed vibe while not being to casual or familiar, a really perfect mix and a great reception/concierge staff who know the area like the back of their hands.
The restaurant / bar was very pleasant and Tony the bar manager has a great team in Aaron and Lou who were wonderful and hospitable during the stay.
Overall a fantastic place to stay and will be back as soon as I'm able.

The Blackman is located perfectly on the edge of Melbourne CBD being a good 30 minute walk to the Yarra River. Our room on the eighth floor had a lovely view of Albert Park Lake and had two small balconies which was a bonus. The room itself (Studio Suite Balcony) was beautifully done, ultra modern and with some nice art on the walls. This theme was carried throughout the hotel including the elevators providing an excellent display of art by Charles Blackman. The staff were helpful although not overly friendly and very much to the point. The bakery was nice for breakfast and made a great coffee which for me is very important so tops marks to the staff here. The restaurant menu could have included some more traditional Australian fare as could have the choice of beers. Some mainstream Australian beers are just as good as the likes of Peroni and that additional choice would have catered for all tastes. On street parking on Arthur St is metered between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday so park on the street outside these hours and avoid the parking cost however spaces are quite limited so don't leave it too late. Overall The Blackman is a beautiful hotel fitting to the Art Series theme. Rydges really must be commended on its range of hotels including Art Series and QT which are both a cut above the rest and provide a premium option to its standard Rydges branded hotels.

Thank you for your very informative review of the hotel and our restaurants. There is nothing quite like a great cup of coffee and you can certainly get this from our bakery. Although our restaurant Classico is Italian themed, hence the Italian beer, we are always looking for feedback to improve the offerings. We really appreciate your honest review and hope to see you again soon.

We stayed here for a long weekend and the hotel in appearance is nice and on the whole, the rooms decent.

However, there was an Alice in Wonderland theme in our room and there rather distracting prints on the walls, and although art is always subjective, they were off putting enough for us to take note.

We found the staff either rude or dismissive on a couple of occasions, such as ordering room service and as soon as my partner had finished her order, the phone was hungup, without the usual pleasantries such as "it will be x time.." or to confirm orders.

Finally the cleaners did not seem particularly effective, there was a dead moth on the floor for several days running (we killed it in the evening and assumed the cleaning staff would hoover it up)

The immediate location isn't great but its very easy to get into the city or go elsewhere via tram / walking so is very convenient to get places, but don't expect to feel like you will be in the thick of it.

I do have to note that the mini bar was very reasonably priced.. make sure to have the Dal zotto prosecco, its very nice.

For a 5 star hotel, it was fine, but no better.

Room Tip: Get one higher up or you might end up viewing an office block

I booked through Wotif and was beyond grateful that this was the hotel we got (I secretly knew after researching and narrowing it down). We had the most amazing room and I could not fault it at all. I am not one to fuss anyway as long as the room is clean. Which it was. The front desk service was great, they were very friendly and engaging. It was a great night away for our anniversary. We will be back.
