“A great alternative to the Prince Hotel”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

I normally stay at the Prince Hotel when I am in Melbourne, but unfortunately they were full and I therefore had to look for an alternative. The Blackman turned out to be an excellent alternative and will actually now become my first choice for Melbourne! The room was spacious and even had a mini kitchen area included. The mini bar / snacks were very thoughtful and not outrageously priced. Bathrooms are tiny (would have liked a little bigger and a bath), but it was functional, great shower and clean. The amenities although great smelling are really painful to get out of the containers - would definitely look at the packaging. I ate at both restaurants and both were really good - the cafe for breakfast also very good. I had room service really late one night and that was average. If there was an improvement I would suggest is that at all times when going to my room there was always room service trays outside many room doors, some being there for at least 18 hours and newspapers had been delivered in the meantime - I really found this to be a bit slack and do think staff should make an effort to check the floors and clear things away. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel and its in a great location with helpful front desk staff and pleasant restaurant staff as well.

Room Tip: The corner rooms are nice and quiet

We stayed for one night at the Blackman at the end of a one month trip to SE Asia. The hotel is delightlful, quirky and theatrical. We arrived early and we could have had a room straight away but were urged to wait and we could have a "nicer" room. We waited and it was a gorgeous room on the 15th floor with great views of the park and out to Port Phillip bay. The room was very well appointed and of course the Blackman art is the focal point. Unfortunately during the night I was taken ill, necessitating a visit to the nearby Alfred hospital (5 star service also!) The staff at the blackman assisted me and my husband in such a kind and supportive way and turned what could have been a very difficult situation in to one that was manageable. My only regret is that I did not get a full night's sleep in the supremely comfortable bed. Thanks to all at the Blackman, we unreservedly recommend your fine establishment and we will not hesitate to stay again

Room Tip: our room on the 15th floor was quiet and we had a great view

A good friend of ours had her 40th Birthday celebrations in the Penthouse Suite and guests were invited to stay the night if they wished, so my wife and I booked a room and dumped the kids for the night. I'd never heard of the hotel before but now that I have I'd happily stay there again.
We arrived about 3pm for our check-in, we were able to park right out the front then after seeing the great reception staff we were given our cards for the room and parked our car. The room cards gave us access to the underground car park. For an extra $15 it's well worth it.
Our room was on the 15th floor and was great. We were in a Studio Suite with a balcony that over looked St Kilda Rd with great views. The room had a decent sized fridge, stove top, microwave and dishwasher, not that we needed any of them. Nice sized TV and King Sized bed (2 singles pushed together), small table with 2 chairs and 2 small sitting chairs. Ensuite was a little small for my liking but usable. We had a quick bite before the party so we walked down the street and had Subway for dinner.
Our friend's 40th was in the Penthouse on the 18th floor with a big balcony with views from Albert Park Lake around to the MCG and to the Dandenongs. A spa was also on the balcony.
We had a great night and a decents night sleep when we eventually got to bed. Breakfast was at the Classico on the ground floor.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked St Kilda rd and was great.

Great location, good for walking and catching a cab into the city.

Friendly and efficient service.

Our room was large with modern decor. Nice magazines, good internet at a cost. Great big windows with fantastic blockout curtains and blinds.

This room was for people with a disability as it had a very large bathroom with a walk in shower with curtain. This let everything get wet (toilet, floors, mats and even into the room if you didn't shut the bedroom door). Small vanity for such a big space- not even enough room to do your makeup easily. Very dim lighting throughout and I kept trying to find a well lit mirror. Frustrating.

If you need the space for mobility though or a cot etc this could be the room for you and suit your needs well.

We ate at both cafes downstairs. Good service at both. Very nice patisserie food at the French cafe.

The hotel has a very modern and arty feel about it, but combined with a very well laid out room, good restaurants and pleasant staff it is my favourite place to stay in Melbourne. Great location - it gets my vote.

Great hotel right on the fringe of the city. We arrived on a Saturday morning and it was such a blissful weekend. 2 mins away, you could be on the tram to city.

We had a corner unit with 2 glass sliding doors. There's a balcony where you could sit to enjoy the stunning view of the lake. The room is cosy with a little kitchenette, microwave oven included. I am used to have a super-single bed all by myself, so the double queen sized bed was a little 'squeezy' for 2 adults.
.
The room looked clean and new. However, on the day we were in, we were disappointed with the thoroughness of the cleaning of the room. The same piece of hand towel we hung at the basin was used to wipe the table top and the plate and bowl we used. It was best we didnt see that. But at least, we now know that happens....could be anywhere. And the room was not vacuumed. Maybe, because we were in the way? The TV was not in the position where you could watch while lying in bed. The small round table was an execellent place for discussion and bonding.

Staff at reception were very friendly and helpful. Always smiling and making sure you understood when you asked for help.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor corner unit facing lake

This hotel is pretty stylish and the room resembled a chic studio apartment. It had nice touches such as aromatherapy, a selection of teas and lifestyle magazines. V comfortable bed and rather spacious room.

View from the balcony wasn't great though, as our room faced an office building. But we could catch a glimpse of Albert Park.

Location was quite good - sort of in between the city and St Kilda, but there aren't many food options nearby. The area is largely made up of office buildings I think, so it also gets quite quiet after office hours.

Slightly pricey but overall, decent value for a really nice room with trendy and unique decor.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback from your recent stay with us. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and our "unique decor". We look forward to welcoming you back to The Blackman.

For the benefit of prospective travellers, while St Kilda Road can get quiet after office hours, there are numerous cafes and restaurants only a short tram ride away. We also have two restaurant options at The Blackman. Depot De Pain is a lovely french-style cafe opening from breakfast through until early evening 7 days a week. Classico offers a classic Italian style menu, opening from breakfast until 11pm 7 days a week.
