Art Series - The Blackman
Ranked #12 of 160 Hotels in Melbourne
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 4, 2012

This is the only Art Series Hotel I've patronized. If it is any sign of the overall excellence of the hotels, then I look forward to trying others out. The Blackman features the lovely artwork of artist Charles Blackman, from its gigantic frontispiece to small framed details and books in each room, in every corridor, even in the passageway leading from the elevators to the underground garage.

I've stayed in two different rooms over the last year. They are beautifully appointed, with meticulous color and fabric selections and very comfortable beds. The rooms I stayed in are spacious -- I felt like I was in a studio apartment. The service is excellent, from the front desk, to room service, to the incredibly genial and knowledgeable servers in Classico, their small lobby restaurant lounge, where I have spent heaps of dosh on great beers and delicious tapas-style Mediterranean dishes.

The Blackman is centrally located, a moment's walk to trams, restaurants, and shopping, and easy by car to get on major motorways in every direction.

Another quick trip to Melbourne and another stay at my home-away-from -home The Art Series Blackman. What can I say about this fabulous boutique hotel that hasn't been said before. Maybe it is the super-sized rooms with a fully functional kitchen or the great choices from the mini-bar (including my favourites "Bunkers" wine and Little Creatures beer) or the great decor. The room was impeccably clean and I was greeted on check in and acknowlegded as a returning guest. Parked the car free out the front overnight and grabbed a great pizza and Barolo at the Classico erstaurant in-house. What more could you want.

Stayed 2 nights over GF weekend great views from 17 floor. Rooms are modern with good kitchenette amenities. Great little french coffee/bakery shop downstairs for your morning fix. I like that its a few km from the city and quiet. Bathroom doors a bit clunky and heavy not much room to slide in and out around the wall, but overall a good experience. Not cheap but something different. Clean and trendy. Front desk guy on checkout on Sunday great.

Room Tip: 17th floor the best with great views either over to the G or Albert park.

This was our favourite stay during our road trip through QLD, Victoria and NSW. We stayed here with our family of four for four nights. The service was friendly and helpful and the location is excellent with great eateries and a tram into the city right at the front door. The room had two queen beds which were separated by the bathroom. Although still in one room, it gave us all a bit of space. The shower was excellent and the kitchenette was fantastic with a dishwasher, stovetop and microwave. Best of all were the beds, pillows and linen which were pure comfort and gave us the best nights sleep. The balcony was great also and the cleaning was exceptional. The lighting was a little subdued for my aging eyes! We also had to wait for about 45 minutes for our room but they eventually moved rooms around to allow us to check in. We did have a lovely place to have a coffee etc while we waited though. I will definitely be back to stay at this very special place:)

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review from your recent stay with us.
We are extremely pleased, that you had a "wonderful stay" at the Blackman.
The twin rooms are designed with the family in mind. Having the beds seperated by the bathroom, gives that feeling of having a larger room. The kitchenettes do also come in very handy when travelling with children.
I will pass on your very favourable comments to the staff here at the hotel, and we look forward to seeing you here again in the near future.

Everything from the desk staff to the art works are fake. No original art in the rooms or the halls just copies/prints. See better art at a picture framers.

Here's the real rub, paid for 2 nights @ $385/night standard room (sure it was AFL GF weekend), got a room on the 7th floor with a view of the office block opposite. Really pissed off! Boutique, all the charm of a Flag-Inn.

Stayed at The Cullen and The Olden many times, computer systems aren't linked because the check-in clerk had no idea I was a return. Further, how does a check-in process take over 20min? The just don't like saying hello, too busy talking amongst themselves.

Bin broken in the bathroom, bath/shower dirty. Poky bathroom. Dark and dingy main room, little natural light.

POSITIVES
Bed comfortable and the kitchenette is a good idea. Dark curtains (and the building opposite) keep the room dark in the mornings for a sleep in.

Room Tip: Stay some place else

Expectations were quite high given overall rating on trip advisor but fell short in a few areas. First the good points - staff friendly and helpful, nice view from our corner apartment on the upper floors including Eureka tower that was lit spectacularly by the setting sun and mini bar prices were unbelievably cheap for quality yummy treats. The vintage bikes were also handy but considering u pay to use them they should be in better condition (gears don't work, tyres a little flat and brakes need a service). If we were here longer would definitely try the scooters too. On the down side a little pricey, no free wifi and mini bar needed attention (our milk had been opened, similarly the popcorn packet in our room was opened). In house restaurant serves nice Italian food but not exciting. Cullen and Olsen are better located if u want lots of restaurants on your doorstep. Overall, more like a big hotel than a boutique hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review from your recent experience at The Blackman.
We love the comments about the staff and the wonderful view from your room, however, it is disappointing to read about the minibar items being opened in your room, and your comments on our Kronan bicyles not in working order. This is certainly not our usual level of high service, and will be discussed with the appropriate people.
We do hope that you will come back to the hotel when you are next in Melbourne, and show you that we can live up to your expectations.
Warm regards,

We were lucky enough to pick up an excellent Sunday night deal at the Blackman, being upgraded to a "Deluxe Studio Suite Balcony". We had a corner suite on the 17th floor with the most amazing uninterrupted views over Albert Park Lake, out to Port Phillip Bay and back into the city. We left the curtains open all night - what a panorama to go to sleep with and wake up to!! Rooms were very modern with mini-kitchen including microwave and dishwasher. Beds were extremely comfortable, pillows so good we bought some. Staff were friendly and helpful. Gymnasium was small but had operational, modern equipment, no swimming pool.

Room Tip: Great views from floors 15 and above, especially corner suites.
