Melbourne Central YHA
Ranked #19 of 155 Specialty Lodging in Melbourne
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 5, 2014

On the good side:
+ friendly staff
+ very central location
+ renovated bathrooms

On the bad side:
- no air con (and that at 42°C outside temperature - as if Melbourne didn't have a summer)
- uncomfortable beds
- super expensive baggage lockers after check-out
- absolutely no atmosphere. Overall the place feels like a state pen rather than a hostel. Security cameras all over the place, a metal fence at the reception when i was checking in; you need your room card for every single door you want to open, and there are absolutely no community rooms to socialise with fellow travellers. I don't know what happened there, maybe they've been robbed or something, but it really has no nice feel about it.

Overall: little value for the money you pay. Would not go there again.

Hi lazy2000
Thanks for your review, and YHA notes all comments on our hostels. Usually Melbourne only has a couple of days of real heat a year and so having air con is not only costly but also bad for the environment. This summer the city has had an exceptional run of warm days which was obviously when you visited. We are also sorry that you missed the two lounges/kitchens and the large outdoor recreation area on the roof with its BBQ, seating and city views.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip to Australia.

Melbourne Central YHA is safe, secure, clean and is well located within the city centre with good transport options near it. Southern Corss Train and Bus terminal is a mere block away thus only needing 5- 10 minutes walk. Tram stops are right in front or next to the Hostel. It is located on the other end of Flinders street from Federation Square thus you only need to walk down the length of Flinders Street to Federation Square and the Melbourne Visitor Centre is there.

Public/common areas are clean and well equipped but they are small. Beds and fairly comfortable but the major downside is that there is no air-conditioning so in the stifling heat of summer, you may suffer. Another downside is that WiFi is NOT free. I understand it is a business and it costs money to operate internet but in this day and age, free WiFi should be De Rigueur. I hope these are areas where the management can improve upon.

I would recommend this Hostel for travellers with however a caveat. If you are looking for the true hostel staying experience, this is not the place for you. Most of the travellers here are families or they keep to themselves so making new backpacker friends is hard here. Yet it is a blessing in the sense that it means for those who likes peace and quiet, this is the place for weary travellers looking for a budget place to stay.

Pros: Great location. 5-10 minutes walk from Southern Cross Bus & Train terminal and the Skybus station located within. It is located on Flinders street and Spencer Street. Walk along the length of Flinders Street and in about 20 minutes you would reach the Melbourne Visitor Center located at Federation Square. The FREE Tourist City Tram (The old style city trams) stop is also located in front of the hostel. Facilities are kept in working condition and rooms are clean. You require a keycard to gain access to almost every other areas of the hostel except public areas ensuring good security. It has a decent rooftop place for sunbathing, relaxing with a book or BBQing. Staff are very efficient, polite and easily approachable. Exterior of the building is kind of run down but the interior is well furnished and well maintained.
Staff do organise events such as Pub crawls and BBQ nights (For a small fee).
You can book adventures or tours through the receptionist and they do provide discounted rates on some or most of them.

Cons: You have to pay for quite a lot of amenities. Internet, Bath Towels.
Major gripe is no air-conditioning.
Minor and contextual gripe is it lacks the excitement, vibrancy of an actual backpacker hostel. Most guests keep to themselves and or are families traveling on the cheap. SO there is no vibrancy, no excitement of an actual backpacker so if you are someone looking for that kind of experience, look somewhere else. However if you like peace, solitude and quiet, then this Hostel is good.

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the south side/wing as they are closer to the bathrooms/shower areas (If you chose r...

I stayed here for 5 nights when my parents were over visiting, although they stayed in a hotel! It was good value for money and mostly clean. My 4 bedded room was nice, and the bathrooms were probably the best i've seen in a hostel. I can't really comment on the common areas, as I didn't use them. Staff were ok. Location is good, but by no means central, but most YHA's are a bit out of the main area, and that was fine with me. I'd probably stay here again if that's all my budget could afford!

This hostel was located well for southern cross station and the sky bus and on the very edge of the CBD, it is about a 15 minute walk to Fed square. The hostel it self was very dated, with small social areas. The rooms are fairly small and very hot on a warm day, the blinds also didn't meet to cover the windows.

On a budget trip, checking into this hostel was the right choice. Situated at the edge of Melbourne's city centre, it is about 5 min walk from the Southern Cross train station, where Skybus (shuttle bus from Tullamarine Airport) stops. The facility is clean, with good security, and relatively low locker rental rate. Right in front of the hostel is the tram station where the free city centre tram No. 35 passes. A convenient store is just round the corner, and there are several supermarkets within walking distance. Overall, very satisfied with my stay there.

This hostel is indeed 'central' as it's in the CBD, just. Unfortunately the area of the CBD in which the hostel is located is not the best. The area is mainly offices, and there are much better options for cafés, restaurants and bars in other areas within central Melbourne. The bars in the area are really grim, for example.

Admittedly the hostel is perfectly located for the Southern Cross station, so I would only probably stay here again if in transit.

In certain places the hostel looks really tired, and although I know that space is a luxury in the inner city, the 3-bed dorm room in which I was staying was more suitable as a twin or a single. With a bunk bed, a single bed and a table (plus everyone's luggage), there wasn't enough room in there to swing a cat (I'm not suggesting you try this).

On the upside, the shower & toilet facilities were spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and the roof did make a great viewing spot to see the New Year fireworks.

But ultimately there are better places to stay in Melbourne.

As far as YHA goes this one is reasonably average. The room is alright but not enough common areas to meet others. The kitchen was always a bit untidy. Our room was a share with 3 others. The bathrooms are actually quite nice. Wouldn't stay here again.
