Very clean and the bed was comfy. A little noisy outside but my mates snoring drowned that out. Excellent dot upstairs to sit and relax with a few drinks. If your on a budget it's a great spot. Good location to town and to south bank

YHA Central in Melbourne has a few things going for it. Its location is great; its close to Southern Cross station, close to the city center- but not so close that its loud outside 24/7. It has a great rooftop terrace, it has apparently been recently refurbished, and this has been done well. Rooms are decent and have a good number of power points, the staff are generally informative and always friendly.

There are a few things that spoil it though. The kitchens are cramped, so much so that they are sometimes in-practical to use. Making it worse is that they double as TV, internet AND common rooms. While the rooftop terrace is great, it has no roof so can't be used during bad weather. Finally, for the first time in all my (many) years of backpacking, it is the first time I have come across a charge for luggage storage, and while $2 might not sound like much, when your already paying above average for the room it feels like a bit of a rip off.

So while Central YHA is probably one of the better hostel in Melbourne, you do pay for it and it is by no means perfect.

Spent my first few weeks here while trying to get settled and find work. Place is clean, nice and has a great pub in the basement level Called Bertha Browns with discounts if you're staying at yha. It was near my work so became a watering hole around 5pm.. Clean rooms in Hostel and worth a little more money than the others. Have fun with people, it's all what you make of it. melbourne, quite possibly the best city on earth!

Stayed there for the Grand Final, hostels was fully booked yet did not appear to be crowded and wasn't noisier than any other. Kitchens are very small and have a cozy feel to them, TV in the kitchen was annoying though. Clean everywhere, friendly and helpful staff, will definitely stay here again.

Stayed for a week. Lovely place. Nice comman area and plenty of dvd's to choose from. Staff were lovely and heplful.

Room was a six share and great. Nice and airy. Very clean and tidy - rare to find in a hostel!

Kitchen and bathrooms were clean and tidy.

Very close to city centre and Southern Cross Station.

The major quirk is the floor. It's uneven, with some unexpected (and unsigned) slopes in spots.

My dorm was large with comfortable bunks and reading lights. There was a fan and in summer it would be essential as the window opened no more than 10cm. Maybe this was to prevent guests from leaping into the airwell but, if so, surely it would be easier to bar the window?

The laundry was excellent, if small, and the kitchens were small, so only useful at off-peak times. I didn't see a TV room or quiet area but I guess they're around.

Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Toilets were small, the male toilet on my floor having just two booths and no urinal. When I went for my first shower, someone had clearly used it to expel solid waste.

Bag storage costs $2 a day which is $2 more than any other hostel I've stayed in.

Location is good, being just one block from Southern Cross station, the main station not only for suburban trains but to the rest of Australia. The coach terminal is also there as is the Skybus to the airport. There are plentiful convenience stores.

Would I stay here again? No. The small toilets and kitchens, plus the baggage charge sink it for me.

Room Tip: Back rooms have no view but have no street noise.

Very clean with friendly staff, adequately sized dorms and big bathrooms. Though there are 2 kitchens there are no other indoor common areas and the cooking spaces get very crowded with people who are only watching tv and not eating. It's a short walk to Southern Cross train station and about 10 minutes to the busy centre.
