The Hilton South Wharf is ideal for attending functions/conferences at Crown Casino, the Conference Centre or the footy at Etihad stadium - as these are all within 5-10 minutes pleasant walking distance along the river.
Upon entry, the architecture has a 'ski lodge' vibe about it which is comforting, as it is not at all pretentious. The rooms are spacious - huge bathroom with a bath, separate shower and toilet. The King bed was so comfortable that we actually slept in until 10.45am, so cannot offer a critique of breakfast! Our sleep was helped by a well darkened room because of the electronic ceiling to floor window blind , and a thoughtful gesture is a softer 'nite' light in the toilet with the control on the bedside.
Melburnians note: if you are driving your car to the hotel, you will get a discount ($20) from Wilson's open air car park across the road, or the hotel valet car parking is $50 and it is apparently parked in the basement car park or right outside the front if the hotel if you need to leave early.
Tourists should enjoy discovering this end of the city which is still quite new. Pack your walking shoes and stroll along the Yarra past the historic ship 'Polly Woodside' over to Southgate restaurant precinct just behind the magnificent Arts Centre/ Gallery where there are new - and often free - exhibitions to enjoy (Currently, memorabilia from The Beatles visit to Australia 50 years ago is on display. Babyboomers' heaven!).
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful - I even rang the concierge before arrival for directions when my GPS was confusing me!! Having stayed recently at The Hilton on the Park', I must confess that I do prefer this particular Hilton.
