“Something for everyone.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013 via mobile

I stayed here 3 nights with my pregnant wife in a double room with ensuite. $110 per night. It was comfortable and quiet, perfect for us.

The kitchen wasn't the cleanest, (there were a couple of cockroaches), but they did have someone on duty at meal times to put dishes through a sterilizer and wipe down surfaces, which upped the hygiene considerably. Lots of large fridges, but they didn't seal well, so our food was at room temperature most of the time. The kitchen was well equipped, and though it looked small, it never felt overcrowded.

The bed was very comfortable, bathroom was spacious.

It is 5 min walk to supermarket, and to the vibrant south Melbourne market. 10 min walk to the south bank. There is a bus stop directly outside, to make things even easier!

Urban Central seems like a great place for travellers and solo backpacking too. They hold free social events every night, like bingo, cooking lessons, exercise classes, and beer pong contests.
There is a bar and a reading room as well.

Breakfast is included, and on Monday and Tuesday you can buy dinner for $6 including a free drink.

The staff were pretty terse and unfriendly, but they were helpful.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back.

I stayed for 3 nights over AFL Prelminiary Final weekend.

I just used it as a bed to sleep, so didn't really use many of the other facilities much, although the kitchen seemed good and the bar was quite good and shows live sport (loved the old school hip hop that was playing on Saturday night!). In the rooms there is a bit of noise from the main road outside, but you can't hear anything from the hostel bar. No complaints about the bed, room or bathroom - everything was in acceptable condition for what you pay for.

The location is decent, easy to get to from Southern Cross Stn (just take the 112 tram) or walk down Spencer St/Claredon St till you get to the BP (which UC is next to) and turn right. For day-to-do travelling it is not as good as some of the more centrally located ones like YHA Melbourne Central, but there is a tram within very short walking distance outside (112) which will take you up to where Spencer St meets Flinders St, where a lot of the tram services run (including the 35 City Circle) or you can walk there (around 10 minutes). It is also very close to the Crown Entertainment Complex.

As my title states, among 3 hostels I stayed in in Australia (Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney), I find this the best in terms of a lot of aspects (not to say that the others weren't good at all).

Check-in process was very smooth and very much like a hotel's (rather than a hostel's) -- Urban Central asks for a credit card for incidental charges, and also charges $10 as deposit for each room key. The location (Southbank) could very well be the only downside of Urban Central as it is a 15-20-minute walk to the CBD, but the walk to the nearest (free) City Circle tram stop is a scenic one where one passes by architectural wonders that are the upscale Crown Complex, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, and the Melbourne Bridge (?).

Rooms (and even the corridors) -- actually, the entire building! -- are very spacious for hostel standards. There was also a travel agency area (a permanent lessee, perhaps) beside the reception desk, where you can book tours both in and out of the state of Victoria. Beside that was the internet "room" housing 8 computers (I think), and then opposite it were pay phones (which I used to make a reservation for Grossi Florentino hihi).

The kitchen is likewise spacious. Free breakfast offered (pasta, rice, Corn Flakes, bread & jams, milk, and orange juice). A tip, though -- pasta and rice are uncooked and other ingredients you need to turn it into a meal are on your account. We didn't know this at first (thought it was going to be the usual hotel buffet spread haha!), so on the first morning we just made do with the cereals and bread (as these did not need cooking!), and then just bought pasta sauce, ground meat, and other ingredients for the next day's breakfast/brunch.

We didn't know how to turn on the shower at first until we spotted the white box-type thing under the shower head which told us how to operate it haha! Basically, this box thing limits your shower to 12 minutes per use, as apparently water is not a sustainable resource in Australia. Hmm, interesting contraption, if I might say. (On a personal note, it helped me prove to my folks that I don't really take too long in the shower as they accuse me -- I was done in 10 and had 2 minutes to spare! haha!)

A little downside: no free wifi, even in the common areas. You may inquire at reception regarding purchase of internet credits.

I picked Urban Central because it was within walking distance to the Art Centre, it was comfortable, clean, and help was on hand if we had any questions. If you want central and cheap for what you get, this is the place to stay.

Urban central is a venue that has a variety of accommodation from multi-dorm backpacking to rooms with en-suite. The beauty of the venue is the location and the fantastic bar downstairs where all the various guests mingle and chat.

Room Tip: It depends what you are after but if a group are travelling organise a dorm and split the price

Good value hostel, 4 bed dorms with big lockers that can fit your entire bag and have a plug inside. Clean rooms, kitchen and bathrooms.
Free breakfast, nice extra, but very basic (cereal, toast). Quite crowded most of the time, hard to get yourself a mug or glass and Always in line for the toasters.
This hostel is very big and spread out over multiple floors. Due to the size it feels quite impersonal.
Overall good value for money and not too far out of the city.
