“A tour with a difference”
Reviewed August 18, 2010

To tour the Great Ocean road and enjoy a fun filled day, book with "A tour with a difference". Grace our guide for the day was very experienced on the Great Ocean Road and it's wonders. We enjoyed a spectacular day, visiting Bell's beach, the 12 Apostles, Koala's, hand feeding birds and a magnificent lunch and dinner included. An experience never to forget!!!!!

“Melbourne's Best Tours...NOT!”
Reviewed July 8, 2010

FIrst of all Great Ocean Road is fantastic. The scenery is magnificent and very worth the trip!

What I am reviewing is the company, " Melbourne's Best Tours". They made what could, and should, have been an amazing experience, a miserable one. The bus was a joke, when you reclined the seats you were pretty much in the other passengers lap. The door on our bus would not close so we have the "thrill" of being on it an extra 20 minutes while the driver fought with it. Speaking of the driver/tour guide, he was grumpy and talked incessantly about nothing. Some background music would have been nice rather than his annoying heavy breathing through his headpiece when he did finally stop cursing other drivers etc. There were, I think, 21 seats on the bus and 20 of them were filled. I spoke with several other passengers who felt the same as I did, that we were treated like students on a school excursion. Also the driver tailgated other drivers and at times was just generally unsafe! We were ever "flipped off" by a car he had been tailgating for awhile.

It is a long day and there were NO food or drink stops after lunch to grab a bottle of water or anything. We did not get back to our hotel until after 8:00pm, so we were hungry and thirsty. All in all we were glad we went but we equated it with a trip to the dentist "something we needed to do" NOT something we enjoyed. So while I recommend a Great Ocean Road tour. I would not go with the ironically named, Melbourne's Best Tour Company!

“Great Ocean Road by public transport”
Reviewed May 20, 2010

Whilst in Victoria I travelled the Great Ocean Road on my own over three days and it didn't really seem worth hiring a vehicle just for me. First the upsides of travelling by public transport:
1. You can just sit back and enjoy the view.
2. The road is in places very narrow and twisty, if you are not used to driving on the left that will add another level of complexity
3. The standard bus from Apollo Bay to Warrnambool stops at all the major view points including the 12 apostles. The timetable allows for 15 to 30 minutes at most of the locations.
4. It is really reasonable.

Downside: The tourist activities in stop over towns such as Apollo Bay do not seem to be built with those without transport in mind. Your accommodation will give you lots of information about things to do within a 30 minute drive, but very little about what you can do on foot or by bike.

“Memorable Great Ocean Road trip in perfect weather”
Reviewed May 5, 2010

The Great Ocean Road was the highlight of our Victoria trip. The drive turned out to be longer than expected, but we were very fortunate to do it on a cloudless sunny day. Unlike most other visitors, we decided to drive from Warrnambool and finish the trip in Geelong. This way, we were able to start with --and spend more time at -- the three most memorable sights: Razorback, Loch Ard Gorge, and the 12 Apostles. The stretch leading to Apollo Bay was full of bends, quite hilly and somewhat tiring. After a very nice meal at Iluka Cafe and refuelling at the Mobil Station in Apollo Bay, we took to the first--for us, the last-- stretch of the GOR. We were glad to finish the drive on this rather narrow and winding segment, just as darkness fell. We had a LPG-fuelled rental car with no EZ Pass for tolls. So we took care to find out about the new "ticket-less" Toll stretch of the Freeway outside Melbourne. And we also sought help from the friendly locals when filling up with LPG at the pumps. (We found using the LPG costs less than the petroleum fuel we are used to).
