The road between Anglesea all the way to Apollo Bay is a must see for all tourists to Melbourne. Hire yourself a good sporty car and you will have the experience of a lifetime. Great views of ocean, spectacular beaches and cliff faces. Curves make this a fun challenging drive for all drivers but if you prefer a slow leisurely drive then use the slow vehicle turn-offs to allow other drivers to pass.

We drove from Melbourne to Adelaide and loved everything about the GOR. Some things we did were suggestions from local people we met at a little festival in Apollo Bay and highlighted our trip. Try and have a stop at Maits Rest for a great walk in the rainforrest. We stayed a few nights in the Otway park (bimbi campsite) wich was recommendable and also got us to see our first bunch of koala's. When you're driving from the Melbourne side, just before 12 apostles ther's a stap named Gibson Steps that will pretty much let you walk up to the first of the 12 apostles on the beach. Make sure you have plenty of days to do GOR at a relaxed pace. It's worth it to hit some of the little roads and end up spending a few hours watching the Ocean hit beach or rocks at random places.

We drove from Melbourne and went as far as Campbell Town. We did it in two days but would love to go back and spend some more time exploring... Preferably in the summer months. Driving through rain forest then to the cliffs over the beach and everything in between was breathtaking.

If I was to do it again I would definitely stay down the Great Ocean Road for two days and really explore.

Great Ocean Drive: I went from Melbourne -> Apollo Bay -> Rainforest Walk(Otway) -> 12 apostles -> Loch and Gorge -> London Bridge -> Back to Melbourne(via Colac/ stop ovr for dinner) . An excellent scenic drive running to a close 250 kms and for most of the distance you will see mountain on your right hand side and sea on the left hand side...Many beaches to stop by and relax and Apollo bay is a good place to have your lunch , had on iluka( food is nice there even with Veg options) ..My personal suggestion ( if driving or taking a one day trip), is to spend good time on 12 apostles(1 hr min) , Loch and Gorge(1.5 hr min) and London Bridge(30 min ). I haven't had a similar view or experience in any of my previous trips spanning over 10 countries. View from these places are really stunning with cliffs/yellow stone rocks running several hundred meters high and sea waves hitting them. Loch and Gorge has a entry where you can access the beach in the amids the cliffs. In Loch and Arge there will be three view path entries . Spend time only on the right(beach access) and the left one(excellent views). Centre one is a long walk with not much to see. I went with "WildLife tours" booked via tourstogo. Costs approx 106 AUD including lunch with a trip on a van. Tour was well managed . Only Con is I would like to have more time on London bridge(10 min) and Loch and Arge(45 min)...Otherwise it was a great , excellent , must to go trip...

If you visit Melbourne, make sure you allow 2-3 days to do this road trip. The views are out of this world. The route is well laid out and you'll spot plenty of wildlife along the way. We actually did it in reverse, driving to the Grampians first and start the GOR from Port Fairy. We found the road a little less busy as it was against the natural flow of traffic. The highlight was definitely the Bay of Islands and the Twelve Apostles. May sure you allow time to see each lookout points as they bring different experiences. If your budget allow, definitely do the helicopter tour, you can see so much on a clear day and it's a different experience from a bird eye view. If you are there near sunset, people have reported sightings of wild penguins swimming back to London Bridge. For wild koalas, go to the Great River Road, you are guaranteed sightings! What ever you do, don't miss the Great Ocean Road!
