Great location, beautiful food, ambiance was definitely there also.
Would go back to Smolt for another serving of the desserts. lined up for the top 3 on the list and wasn't disappointed

Smolt is smack bang in the middle of Salamanca Square and looks really classy from the outside. Once you get inside though, it's pretty cramped and the decor is uninspired. You're looking around the $35+ range for mains and while every sounded exceptionally fancy - it was really pretty ordinary. The sheer fact I could get a meal of equal or greater quality from any number of venues in Melbourne for at least $10 less speaks volumes. I think Smolts needs to concentrate less on coming across as classy and sophisticated and either vastly improve the quality of their meals, service and decor or signficantly reduce the prices of their meals and perhaps lose some of the culinary lingo on the menu. I don't mind having to ask what something is when the end result is amazing but when it's something I could get from a pub in Melbourne - it just comes across as very unjustifiably pretentious.
Don't get me wrong - the food isn't bad. It's just not even vaguely in the range that it's priced. If money isn't an object and you're happy with a quick in/out bite to eat for dinner then give this place a bash but it's certainly not somewhere you'd go for a long, pleasant evening with friends over food and wine - it just doens't have the atmosphere for it.

Smolt is in a great location...smacked in a tourist square for people watching. It is a bistro style dining, ordinary decor and noisy because of poor acoustics. Food......."yawn" though the arancini was rich with lovely melted cheese and yummy......errr it stopped there. The food was average.....a tad boring actually. The service was polite though a tad too informal and casual for its price range. The service but not consistent.....we had to ask for an ice bucket for the champagne, there were other wine bottles on an already narrow table, tap water was mixed with sparkling mineral water.....The wine and champagne could be chilled a bit more....Smolt need to try harder. Disappointing given what Tasmania is famed for....great food.

After a hard Sat morning at the Salamanca markets had a late lunch here. Not cheap and not large portions but tasted great. We were at the end of the lunch service so staff's attention was waining, but still very happy with the experience.

Just walked in off the street. delightful surroundings, excellent service and the food we had was superb. We highly recommend the resturant. We dined for a late lunch and unfortunately couldnt return for dinner. Price for what we had was very reasonable.
