“Modern European in Salamanca Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013

Smolt has a Spanish leaning to its menu and drinks but it's a bit broader European than that. The standard of cooking is high and the service attentive and friendly. Our mains took a half hour to arrive but there was a very large party there at the same time so the kitchen was under pressure. The decor is modern, a curious mix of dark colours and industrial style. It's quite a large restaurant but is sensibly divided into several separate spaces that make it more intimate. It is quite a noisy place due to all of the glass and metal surfaces but no more than most restaurants of its type. We had a pleasant evening and a very good meal.

“Hard to find fault with Smolt”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

We dined on a Friday night, and found the value, service, food and atmosphere all well above average. The pork sausage pizza was great, as was the slow cook shoulder (a special that night). The wine and beer list are both very good, particularly the beers...

One criticism would be that many of the couple tables are lined up far too close together. I would ask for a bar spot next time.

Decent value for money is perhaps why Smolt deserves its higher trip advisor rating than some of the other well known restaurants in Hobart. Very happy to recommend.

“Consistent performer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

The Smolt is one of my standby restaurants to entertain visitors when my favourite restaurant is not open. There is a broad range of food in addition to the pasta and pizza. The white anchovy pizza is a must try. Try also the lamb, oven roasted young chicken, grilled salmon and salmon cerviche. The wine list is broad with many wines from Tasmania and the mainland, plus others from Italy, France, and New Zealand. The Sam Scott Fiano for the Adelaide Hills is worth trying with seafood and the Way Wood Quattro Vini of Nobbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet and Shiraz was an interesting blend of reds and also worth trying.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

Ate here with my wife and two friends last night after visiting MONA ((amazing!). Wife and I had the duck confit and friends both had the venison and pork risotto. Finished with pear crumble and house made ice cream. All were excellent and well priced. Service was super and the young lady looking after us certainly earned her generous tip. Would be back in a flash.

“Suave place. (as long as you aren't looking for a proper meal)”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013 via mobile

This place is very impressive from the outset.
Location wise this place is very tidy.
Right amongst cafes clubs and bars.
I will admit I found the menu disappointing but i was quite hungry and was really looking for a solid steak or chicken dish. What i was faced with were some fancy dishes that would have served more as a rich and exotic tapas type menu. I do recall they had a good wine selection but i also recall it was as pricey as the menu.
Great place to take someone you are looking to impress. Just best to grab a bite to eat first.
