Description: One of the most popular pubs in Tasmania. Café style, warm and inviting atmosphere, great fun for lunch or a night out. Popular with a large, loyal local following. Award winning food, large wine selection and live music every day of the week. Also with 2 function rooms and a beergarden with BBQ facilities.name for itself until it became the empire in 1921 but not for the reasons we no it today, it was known for prostitution, drug dealing and all other nasty goings on it was not until it opened as the republic bar and café in 1997 That we started to get a name for ourselves not only as the premier live music venue in hobart but arts, politics and the great quality pub food as well! When it first opened the live music scene was close to non existent in hobart, starting off with generally only local music and concentrating on the genre of blues and jazz until slowly broadening the live music into pretty much all genres and this is when we started getting the bigger live acts here tex perking, tim rogers, magic dirt, jebediah and later on Augie march and Lisa Mitchell and pub rock favourites dallas crane. Also in the past we have had some big international acts here.

“Great pub, gigs too loud, food got worse”
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

Ive frequented the republic like so many music lovers in Hobart. The bar staff are great, always efficient, and the drink prices are competitive. They are let down by recent changes. The sound system is run by a guy who must be deaf, as it's often way way too loud. It's a bit hit and miss, but as a musi myself I value my hearing, so I always bring plugs. The food used to be better, but there has been some changes and it just isn't as good. I used to love the chicken breast, but last time I ordered it it wasn't a breast fillet, rather it was like a giant chicken nugget - processed chicken. I also got food poisoning within 2 hours of that meal.

Come for the music (with plugs), eat before you come, enjoy a nice beer.

“Excellent food”
Reviewed June 23, 2013 via mobile

Based on the earlier reviews and since it was near our hotel, we thought we would give it a try.
We got there around 7pm on Sunday night. The menu choices looked very interesting and I chose the Wallaby with a side order of mushrooms. Absolutely fabulous! Very tastey with good sized portion. The apple and rhubarb pie was also terrific! Highly recommended
Live music starts at 9pm so is not an issue if you get there at a reasonable time.

“Giant room for improvement in audio department”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Just been to Owl Eyes gig there. Pub wise, it's a good place with good food and friendly services. But, it fails badly in one of the main selling points: audio quality. Giant speakers were driven until they were so horribly distorted. Couldn't hear her voice most of the time... They should make distinction between quality and quantity of the sound.

“The best bar in Hobart”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

What a fantastic vibe this place has. From the art gallery in the dining area to the comfy couches around the fire, this place made you want to stay and eat and drink.
The meals were traditional pub fare and tasted great.
If I lived in Hobart, this would be my local.
Great staff and really friendly.
