“Disappointing breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012 via mobile

Having eaten dinner at maldini a number of times and thoroughly enjoying it, we decided to finally try their breakfast.

But, it was disappointing to say the least:-( I had scrambled eggs Benedict- the eggs were overcooked and the toast was undercooked...there was also a distinct lack of flavor in the meal as a whole.

Unfortunately, even the coffee didn't make up for the meal.

I really wanted this to be a delicious breakfast but it wasn't.

“Great food but quite chaotic !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2012

Tuesday evening found us at Salamanca without a booking and starving. My wife had heard good reports from colleagues who had broken their fast at Maldinis and then gone on to revisit for dinner having been that impressed with breakfast. It was fairly chilly last tuesday but despite this the outside seating was very busy. We approached the inside with trepidation and were assailed
by the noise emanating from an even busier inside dining area. Despite the obvious frenetic pace going on inside we were quickly spotted and greeted by a male waiter. We asked fro a table for two and he very professionally gave us a choice of three tables ideal for the two of us. This young man gave us menus, told about the overhead extras boards and promptly disappeared. After a short perusal of our menus we were approached by a very young female waitress who asked if we would like any drinks before ordering. My wife has been talking about
how she started drinking Campari when going out in Cape Town many years ago so we both decided to give over to nostalgia and so we each ordered Campari, orange on ice. These were brought to us by a third person and this pattern developed throughout the night. The Camparis
were pleasant but very much on the weak side and a very disappointing; Especially at $8.50 a pop. While drinking our aperitifs we continued to peruse the menu and after deciding on our starters we were forced to wait sometime before attracting the third waitress to place our order for starters.I ordered the warm peppers [red],cacciatore sausage and black olives with ciabatta at $8.50. My wife ordered marinated anchovies and chillie also served with ciabatta which is toasted and really is scrumptious. We shared the two dishes between us and both were tasty and substantial. The anchovies were a dollar more at $9.50 and could have had a little more chillie but i suppose this is just a personal thing. I forgot to mention but shortly after ordering starters we also ordered our main course and as my wife had ordered Risotto alla Pescatore she had broken tradition and ordered a bottle of italian which is referred to as their "house wine".Again what transpired was that a different waitress brought a glass of white wine to our table and not the bottle which was clearly ordered. When the bottle arrived at our table it was carried by a third young lady who showed us the bottle but was then called away to attend to some more pressing chore and quickly returned with a friendly apology but alas went off again and again taking our bottle of white with her. This happened 3 times and was really quite comical. The waitress in question was obviously under extreme pressure and as it turned out
was training our original waitress. We gathered later on that 3 new staff had started that night.
We were relieved they had not started on a saturday night !! Well, pleasant but rattled waitress number three eventually showed us the unopened bottle and poured us our wine after allowing my wife to first try it. She left the wine in a very nice wine cooler but unfortunately this cooler had no ice nor water in it and therefore was superfluous. At $31.50 per bottle for house wine im sure most people would expect a slurry of ice and water to keep the wine at the chilled temperature. I attracted the original welcoming waiter who did promptly return with our cooler and some ice but no water. This seems to be a common failing among lots of otherwise decent restaurants. That is to say without the ice melting the bottle sits on top of the ice and will not remain cold. On to our main dishes. The wifes risotto was really very good and the mixed sea food plentiful and well cooked. My pan roasted eye fillet [medium] was thick and juicy and cooked to perfection as were the parsnip puree and baby carrots. Unfortunately i cant give it a 10 out of ten as it is described as being wrapped in prosciutto but my steak was naked albeit very tasty. At $37.50 steak a special treat but my wifes dish at $30.50 was a better value deal.
All in all we had a very satisfying experience despite the snags which were rescued by the thoroughly pleasant and friendly staff. PS. When we asked our main waitress for our bill she wizzed off and we watched her calculating furiously before rushing out of the restaurant? We inquired about our bill and a different waitress brought it to us. As i said, chaos but friendly and very good food which of course is after all the main thing

“Slow service, average food, expensive”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2012

We visited with our two children. The food took nearly an hour to arrive. The two bowls of pasta napoli for the kids looked like soemthing out of a can and tasted average. The pastas for the adults hadnt been drained properly and were tasteless. The kitchen seemed disorganised, with the only food coming out at a consistent pace being garlic bread. However, the service was good and the people friendly. For what it was, it was expensive and we were disappointed. As people who have visited Hobart before, we have had some very good meals in Hobart and know that restaurants here can do a lot better. Adrian from Melbourne

“Authentic Italian in best location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2012

We had no reservation but very friendly staff soon found a nice table for 4. The rest of the night ran like clockwork as any good italian eating experience should. Wine list is extensive the menu options would make any foodie happy and the food was wonderful. We had such a great time we went back again before we left Hobart and enjoyed it all again. We will be back.
