Steak house. ***** five stars. The service was brilliant. The food was just delicious. Included was the salad bar and much as you wanted. The teenagers loved it. Apple Crumble with double cream is a must.

“One of the Best in Hobart”
Reviewed January 30, 2014

They did not accept bookings for 2 people. We had to wait for 20 min for a table. The guy who was looking after the tables was very friendly. Having got a Table we had the choice of a salad bar -excellent. It had a variety of choices and unlimited. This restaurant provides charcoal BBQ excellent steaks. Staff were very very friendly. Do not miss this restaurant.

“Big and boisterous but tip top steak”
Reviewed January 29, 2014 via mobile

We were recommended this place by a colleague and tried to book, but was told that bookings weren't accepted for couples. On arrival we were told a table would be ten minutes and were showed to the bar area, the table was ready just as we had selected a bottle of wine from a decent list, within 3-4 minutes. On arrival at the table we were informed of the specials and that salad accompanying mains was available from self-service bar - wine and water were served. The starters were top class (tempura prawns and salt & pepper calamari) and my steak (small was big enough) was absolutely perfect. My wife had the jamaican chicken, which though tasty was a little dry. Service throughout the night was friendly and unintrusive but as we had started late (9pm) we were last customers in one room and were neglected a little towards the end of the evening. This is not the place for a quiet intimate dinner but overall the quality of the food and wine was great.

“Great steak place”
Reviewed January 29, 2014 via mobile

Decide to patron the Ball & Chain on our recent trip to Tassie. The restaurant was also recommended by friends. Be advised the restaurant does not take bookings for small groups or couples as we found out. Arrived around 6:30 and was greeted and seated promptly. Restaurant was filling up fast at this time. Service was fast and has large wine list, local and imported. Started off with a local beer and wife had champagne (chromy) which said was very nice. I order a med size porterhouse (rare) and wife order small size scotch fillet (med) and a local Merlot. Food arrived promptly with a side of chips. Meals come out with a baked potato and there is a salad bar which is OK. My steak was cooked exactly rare and the wife's was closer to med/rare. Meat was great but would have ordered the large cut next time as was a little small for my appetite. The local Merlot we had was also a good choice. All in all had a nice experience and meal. Service was good, fast and friendly. Nice for a special occasion.

“Just average.”
Reviewed January 28, 2014 via mobile

Our overall experience with this grill is that the food is just average. The service was courteous. It has a large dining area. When we dined it was about 90% full and was a bit noisy. My eye fillet steak was cooked the way I like. It was however a bit bland tasting. The steak on the kids kebab was tough. Kids fish and chips was a bit tasteless. I wife had the lamb shank which she described as just okay. It was a reasonable portion cooked okay nothing special. The mash potato side Was dry.
