“Worth a look”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

St David's Cathedral is one of beauty well worth going to look at and if you have the time go to a service there. It's central in the city and easy to find around are many other things to see with in walking distance like franklin square the cat and the fiddle arcade.

“Lovely Cathedral”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

very traditional, very English. always open and hours of services listed outside. often has special events, a flower festival and near Christmas a lovely Christmas shop on the side entrance. Saturdays are weddings days and the church has bell ringers working for a lengthy spell ringing the big bells during this time. Also note that the corner where the cathedral is, cnr Murray and Macquaire street is one of the few left in Australia that still has it's original historical colonial Georgian buildings on each of the 4 corners still standing.

“Exceedingly beautiful....and a working church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

I always find a sense of peace and serenity in any church around the world. Cathedrals by their definition convey power as the heart of a diocese together with the Bishop’s seat. St David’s in the centre of Hobart is on a smaller scale than most cathedrals however; it looks to be a community minded, working church in an inner city location. The Bell Tower dominates the skyline around the area and is separate to the main church – linked via a cloister.

Although housed in a magnificent Victorian, Neo – Gothic style, stone structure, the internal atmosphere is perhaps that a country church and perhaps less intimidating than other ‘grand’ style cathedrals. I loved the fact that even in a city, the doors were open to welcome worshipers, the needful and tourists like us.

We walked through the symbolic cruciform designed nave with gorgeous stained glass windows on each side and Gothic pointed arched columns. The windows had themes representing knights, saints and biblical scenes - the chancel had another magnificent stained glass window. Ahead of this is the exemplary artistry of the rood screen and crucifix with quatrefoils’; the choir, then the sanctuary and high alter.

Other standout features were the Baptismal font, the pulpit, wooden vaulted ceiling, the quirky assigned pews for the Governor and Bishop plus plaques and memorials - past and present. Not only did we experience history and beautiful ecclesiastical architecture but were also imbued with a tranquility of spirit – St David’s is exceedingly beautiful so be sure to make it a ‘must visit' while in Hobart!

Enjoy your experience!
