I used to study in Hobart and have been to many places in this region. Mt Wellington gives you an enormous view and it's worth the trip but for me, the Mt Nelson lookout is an absolute stunner and the best view in Hobart. Apart from seeing the city (and you are close enough for details) it's further south than Mt Wellington so you have a glorious eagle eye view of the peninsulas and bays right across that region. The terrain is fascinating and it's serene to spend time here. While you're up there you can learn a bit about some early history and stop in at the cafe ('The Station Cafe' - which is much better than your average tourist location venue) for a meal or a drink.
