Take a ride over this bridge and enjoy the views. Learn about the barge crash many years ago that claimed lives. Best to avoid it during peak traffic if you can.

You can walk or drive over the Tasman Bridge which spans the Derwent Estuary, but it's more fun to walk or sail under the bridge on the foreshore path for an up close look at the bridge's structure. Park benches and picnic spot close by.

Boy, what a wonderful surprise this majestic icon was for us! My wife and I could not resist taking a walk from a safe parking area around Montagu bay, to get atop this beautiful concrete creature. What we found at the top was simply amazing - great views, and lots of fresh air, bought to us by a lovely river gale that almost blew my eyebrows off it was so ferocious. My wife's hat got blown off and across five lanes of traffic, and whilst scratching my groin I dropped my car keys through a hole on the deck and into the River Derwent a looong way below, requiring the RACT to be called out, to no avail - very expensive day in the end, although my wife picked up a cheap hat at K-Mart via the 11km walk home. But it was all worth it to get atop this gray beast. I'd do it all again, but probably be more careful with my car keys next time. Thank you Tasman Bridge, be beautiful forever. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful bridge in the world, more so than the likes of the Brooklyn, Storey, Sydney Harbour, Sanfrancisco, Alva or Rope Bridge of Northern Ireland.

Connects the city with the suburbs. Very easy to drive. Watch out for the new speed-varying limits lit up. (First in Tassie as at Jan '13). Great views when crossing the bridge.... only for the passengers. Bridge indicates "you are now in Hobart".

Hmm... would you really go out of your way to see the Tasman Bridge? Most people will probably drive over it several times before realizing there is anything special about it, and there are certainly plenty of more spectacular or interesting bridges around the world. But it is actually a pretty special bridge. For one, while it is huge and imposing; indeed a 'concrete brontosaurus' as it is known to Tasmanians, it actually sits well in the landscape. It's arched form mirrors the shapes of the surrounding hills and Mt Wellington itself. More than this, it provides an important link across one of the biggest and deepest natural harbours in the world. How important this was was discovered in 1975, when a boat crashed into it, bringing down a section and several cars, and leaving at least one car perched precariously on the edge. There are lots of sites on the net about this if you google 'Tasman Bridge Disaster'. For some years afterwards people from the east (including 3 year old me) had to get to Hobart by ferry, and then by a long diversion over a temporary bridge that was built up river. It was good to get the old Brontosaur back again!
If, after reading this, you are curious to get a look at the bridge, you can get good views of it from Rosny Hill to the south east or Regatta Point, above the cruise ship terminal, to the south west (in walking distance of the CBD). You can also cross it on foot if you want but I wouldn't recommend it (long, noisy and full of traffic fumes) - better off going for a stroll in the nearby Botanic Gardens if you are feeling that energetic.
