Being a big fan of architecture and deco period, I was trilled to stay here.
Tildy the host is fantastic. Rooms are basic, clean ...all that you need to be happy and comfortable.

Close to everything. Will return for sure!!

Astor is a cute B&B located in the center of Hobart, Tasmania, with walking distance to most places. Teldi, the woman who managed the B&B is funny and welcoming person. The place is kept clean and neat, but don’t expect to have bathroom in your room. Breakfast, (cereal toast and jam) is available from 7:30 to 10:00 AM. We spent three nights at this hotel, but I could not sleep well in either of the nights, the bed was just not comfortable. While you may be able to find a room with shower, the toilet is shared.

Room Tip: If you want shower in your room, expect to pay more

Stayed 3 nights here in Dec 2012. Location is great, easy to walk anywhere in Hobart. Room was not too big, but just fine for us. Shared bathrooms were never occupied, so no problems. Breakfast is simple, but will get you going until lunch. The place has plenty of character, since it's quite old. But the best thing was Tildy, the lady who runs the place. She gave us 5 star service and I really want to thank her for that. This is a very special place to stay because of her. Highly recommended!

Every once in a while in my travels, I come across someone unique. Someone which I know there exists only one in the world and they're here. At the Astor hotel, I was privileged enough to meet and talk with one of these rare individuals.

Many reviewers have mentioned the flaws of the Astor hotel. The rooms are indeed a bit on the basic side; only one wall outlet, wifi is spotty at best and there are no TV's to my recollection except in the day room. The elevator can only accommodate luggage and bathrooms are shared. Location is good but Hobart is not exactly New York so everything is in walking distance of everything. Overall, it would seem like a three star hotel.

But then there is Tildy. Tildy is the owner/manager of the hotel and makes sure everyone is well aware of that fact. Imagine a female version of Basil Fawlty only much more friendly and somewhat less likely to pour cream into your briefcase. If she didn't like you, suddenly there's a conference in town and all the rooms are booked. Also, as some trip advisor posters have discovered, she has a zero tolerance policy on idiocy. If you are a moron, she will be more than happy to point that fact out to you as well as recommending a fairly uncomfortable place to put your luggage.

If Tildy is your friend, you will have the joy and the privilege of being in the presence of one of the worlds most interesting people. She can recommend tours and trips galore throughout Tasmania and will happily make all the reservations for you. She will also merrily talk your ear off about any subject you wish to broach to her. Truly, one of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, too rare to die and one of those people that makes this world the interesting place it is.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street can be noisy due to the street racing at night.

This Hotel is well located and has its own special character. The personnel were friendly and helpful however the room was functional but very dull and could really be cheered up with some decoration.

We were lucky to find this delightful gem of a hotel, having researched many hostels in nearly the same price range. The Astor was a delight, with beautiful original art deco features, spotlessly clean rooms, a lovely breakfast provided in the sitting room, fantastic location and friendly reception. We didn't even notice the shared bathrooms as they were right outside our door and they never seemed occupied by other guests. Tildy was a joy, providing humour to our day, recommendations and even offering us old linens for our camping trip! She was extremely accommodating and allowed us to store our baggage as we picked up our car rental. I can't recommend the Astor enough and will have great memories of our time in Hobart!

A beautiful art deco hotel with some gorgeous origin features. Great location, good rates and friendly service in an unusual boutique pension style hotel - ticks all the boxes for me.

For those who sleep lightly see if you can get a room on the top floor as I was woken by squeaky floor board above me. Otherwise a great option.

Room Tip: As above top floor if squeaky floor boards will wake you. Also there is choice of shared bathrooms...
