Description: Kathmandu is relatively new to Hobart, offering a delicious range of Nepalese food, taking inspiration from our neighbours India, Tibet and China. Picture a quiet evening out with your loved one, tucked away in an intimate dining space, soft warm lighting and street views of heritage Battery Point. Or a lively get together with a bunch of friends out the back room. This place caters for all, providing excellent and attentive service. The menu is extensive, offering a range of dishes tailored for meat and vegetables. Selection of curries, covering, fish, chicken, lamb and goat. To accompany serves of garlic roti and rice, one infused with almonds, peas and currants. The flavours in these meals are delicately complex, where saffron, cumin and cardamon marry black pepper cinnamon and ginger. Beautifully presented, and prepared you will be hankering for more.

“curry heaven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2014

When I recently felt a real need for a good curry, our friend in Hobart knew Anil from his spice shop on Elizabeth Street, and recommended highly his family's restaurant that opened last year in Battery Point. I was over the moon with the smells of food coming from the kitchen where his wife was cooking, and since we had never eaten Nepalese food before, we asked Anil for a good selection of dishes. Each of us got the mixed entree platter of delicious bites, with mushroom, chicken and dumplings, and I felt like ordering a 2nd round, but held back as the mains were coming ... and for that we had chosen the traditional Thakali dinner that consisted of a dahl lentil soup, rice, and 2 curries presented on a silver tray. I had the beef and lamb curries, both with beautiful full round flavours, so rich and lovely that my mouth waters just thinking about them. Can't wait to go back for more! Prices are reasonable and offer a very good value, there is a wide selection including many vegetarian dishes. You can ask the chef to adjust the "heat" to your liking. Service was friendly and we sat in the front room, it was spacious and comfortable, there's also outside seating.

“Tasty but a few issues”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2014

It's a busy restaurant, but then I think most things in battery point are. Byo $5 corkage always good, but also good but short wine list. All the food was well cooked, the goat very tender. Spices were good. However I am always suspicious when we are asked whether we want the curry mild medium or hot. Surely it is the heat it is? We order the platter for two of four courses. Soup and entres came out in good time but then we waited and waited and waited for the mains. And we waited. Curries finally came out. We were so hungry we tucked in knowing that we didn't have our rotis. They arrived when we were half way through the mains. Portion sizes are generous. We were stuffed and could have done with time out. And then as soon as plates cleared away out came dessert! Timing is everything when you are getting four courses, the kitchen should not just send out the food when it suits them. The wait staff should also be attentive to this. On the plus side like I said it was tasty, and with byo wine option made for a filling and cheap meal. Actually very reasonable. I would give this place a second chance.

“Try Nepalese, you won't be disappointed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

Our first night in Tassie and we stumbled across a gem. A lovely venue, very attentive wait staff and the food! Very well presented, fresh as, and if you like your curries your taste buds are in for a treat. We had goat, beef and vege dishes. Enjoyed them all and well priced too. Well worth a visit.
