“Fantastic steaks, great service”
Reviewed June 9, 2014

Reading recent views of this restaurant, nearly dissuaded us from going, but I'm so glad we did. We were greeted promptly by the efficient maitre'd (not sure what the other reviewer was saying about having to stand in the cold - just shut the door!) who showed us to our table upstairs. It's great what they've done with the place since it was Onba and we can't wait to come back in summer to take advantage of the lovely outdoor balcony area.

We were served by a friendly, waitress who was so knowledgeable about the food and wine, we knew we were in good hands. Believe me, in Hobart, it's a refreshing surprise to have wait staff who can describe the details of a dish because they have actually tasted it and who know exactly what wines will go with each course. As it turned out, this was particularly useful, because the first two wines we chose were no longer in stock!! Perhaps a wine menu update is in order?

Our entrees (potato croquettes and a Tassie scallop special) were lovely and arrived in good time. The scallops, in particular, were perfectly cooked, clearly fresh and went brilliantly with the crispy prosciutto and cauliflower purée. Obviously, we ordered steaks for mains, because this should be what a grill does best. They were amazing. Cooked to perfection (and, as a rare steak eater, this is vital) and suited nicely to their accompaniments of a divine chunky mash and a nice take on a house salad: Waldorf inspired. Totally worth paying extra for the Wagyu too - so melt in your mouth, like butter! The recommended wines (a Grey Sands white with entree and a smooth local Cab Sav with mains) could not be faulted.

Whilst the dessert menu looked good, we were both so full it just wasn't possible! Would we come back? Absolutely, but we would try to sit upstairs again to have the same waitress (tall, slim, short hair); her knowledge and friendly, professional manner truly added to our evening.

All in all, a wonderful dining experience. As experienced foodies, we both agreed it was in our top 10.
*just a note to explain our star ratings for atmosphere and romance - it is noisy. We loved the bubbly air of people having a good time, but if you're wanting a quiet, romantic dinner, then maybe try a mid-week night. Fri/sat seems flat out and very noisy.

“Over-priced with poor service and way too noisy!”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

When we first walked in the door, we had to half stand outside to wait at the 'please wait to be seated' area, think they need to re-think the positioning of it so that it is not directly in front of the door. Once seated we were given the drinks menu and didn't see the waitress for another thirty minutes. When the waitress did return to take drinks orders, she stood behind two of those in our party as they were trying to choose a wine - apparently they were taking too long for her liking as I noticed her rolling her eyes and then placed her hand on her hip, acting noticeably annoyed. Drinks turned up about fifteen minutes later.
Food was average, particularly for the exorbitant prices and we learnt that the best way to get service was to hail a waitress (and not the one who took our drinks!). The second waitress we had who took our food orders was much more pleasant than the previous older lady however.
Probably the worst part was the acoustics of the place - you had to yell to be heard by the person sitting right beside you - this also made it really difficult to hear what the waitress are saying.
Also disappointing was an older male staff member who appeared to know (or I hope he did) the people on the table behind us, who I saw flip the bird to the people on this table.
Wouldn't recommend, the restaurant and certainly will not be going back....

“Overrated and way overpriced! ”
Reviewed May 23, 2014 via mobile

We ate here on our recent trip to Hobart and were severely disappointed. The service was slow taking almost an hour to give us our meals which were cold when they came out. The 'mash potato' was a hard cold lump, I would not describe it as mash at all. The fish was tasty but a little to salty. The ribs were good. The entrees were ok. Scallops were tasty. But seriously the price is a joke. I would not recommend this place at all.

“Amazing Steak”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

We went in on Monday night. The waitresses were friendly & attentive BUT the steak was to die for. The waitresses came up during the meal and asked how our meal was going, 'knowing' that the beef was superb.
Full commendation to the chefs!!
We all agreed that they were the best steaks we had ever had.

Great service, warm cost atmosphere, we shared the slow cooked lamb which was fantastic and huge. Lots of choices on the menu, highly recommended.
