Had some great news the day before so my partner and i went for lunch. Ordered a nice bottle of wine and were about to order our food when the waiter approached us nervously .. '..err...umm.. would it be ok if i.. err.. took a credit card to put behind the bar to..urr.. ensure payment?'... EXCUSE ME? I could understand this if we were a large booking or in a very busy establishment, but we were the only customers in the restaurant. I wonder if they would ask their clientele who dine in expensive suits for a upfront credit card to 'ensure payment'.. i think not. The pompous judgmental waiter took one look at dreadlocks and made a rude assumption.
Both my partner an i have worked a combined length of 23 years in hospitality, myself as a qualified chef and my partner as a trained tour guide. We have worked in establishments ranging from backpackers to 5-star hotels so between us we know whats what about customer service, and we agreed that in our years of experience we have rarely or never seen customers treated with such judgmental disrespect.
Obviously we got up and left the restaurant, suddenly understanding why there absolutely no other customers dining in the 'lunch rush'. I have since checked with friends who have dined at this establishment and it is not their policy to take credit cards before ordering to ensure payment. I will certainly not be ever revisiting this establishment, i much prefer to spend my money places where the staff dont look down their nose at you.
