“Appalled and Offended!!”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Had some great news the day before so my partner and i went for lunch. Ordered a nice bottle of wine and were about to order our food when the waiter approached us nervously .. '..err...umm.. would it be ok if i.. err.. took a credit card to put behind the bar to..urr.. ensure payment?'... EXCUSE ME? I could understand this if we were a large booking or in a very busy establishment, but we were the only customers in the restaurant. I wonder if they would ask their clientele who dine in expensive suits for a upfront credit card to 'ensure payment'.. i think not. The pompous judgmental waiter took one look at dreadlocks and made a rude assumption.
Both my partner an i have worked a combined length of 23 years in hospitality, myself as a qualified chef and my partner as a trained tour guide. We have worked in establishments ranging from backpackers to 5-star hotels so between us we know whats what about customer service, and we agreed that in our years of experience we have rarely or never seen customers treated with such judgmental disrespect.
Obviously we got up and left the restaurant, suddenly understanding why there absolutely no other customers dining in the 'lunch rush'. I have since checked with friends who have dined at this establishment and it is not their policy to take credit cards before ordering to ensure payment. I will certainly not be ever revisiting this establishment, i much prefer to spend my money places where the staff dont look down their nose at you.

“Nice thin crust pizza”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Pro: Great pizza (I got the one with lots of different kinds of meat on it) that isn't too big for one traveller, because it's thin crust. Affordable beer.

Con: Pizza seemed expensive, but perhaps it's just an issue of paying for the quality of ingredients used (as, as noted above, I thought beer was quite fairly priced for a hotel bar).

“Tapas????”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Attached to the Hadleys Mercure Hotel, this is a rather strange place. Tapas was explained to us as food to share. No it isn't. go to Spain and find out what Tapas really is. Food was ok but atmosphere was in short supply. And a cheese platter consisting of one cheese? The manager sounded French and should know better!

Had only 1 night in Hobart and decided to try out Charcoal. The food was great, in particular the cevishe was fantastic. Great service, very attentive. Excellent overall experience.

Confusing menu, not explained well enough. Wrong item given on menu..mentioned it at paying but they did not seem to notice nor care.
