Owner description: In the heart of Hobart's colourful dock precinct, you will embark on an exclusively Tasmanian wine experience at the Gasworks Cellar Door. With 16 Tasmanian wines always on tasting, a knowledgeable wine expert to guide you through the ever-changing labels, a stylish interior design, and fascinating information about the island's wines and history- this is no ordinary tasting experience. With its sandstone facade and tall brick chimney, it's clear that the Gasworks complex has an industrial past. The cylindrical gasometer tank that once stored coal-gas is gone, but this is the place where coal was burned to generate the gas that lit the streets of Hobart. The Cellar Door itself is located in the original Gasworks head office, where high ceilings, polished Tasmanian oak floors and a sweeping timber staircase reflect the importance of the enterprise from the late 1850s. How it works:- Your guide will introduce each wine in detail, talking about the region, the climate and the winemaking techniques that create each one's special character. To taste your way around the Gasworks Cellar Door, you purchase a tasting card for $10. There are three cards •12 wines (20ml each) •6 wines (40ml each) or, •3 wines (80ml each) The 12-wine card gives you the widest options; while the 3-wines card lets you savour a trio of your choice.

“What a way to spend an afternoon”

Great centre showcasing the different wine regions of Tasmania. Can taste wines from each region, with a very reasonable fee structure that allows you to choose how large a pour you would like. For example you can choose less wines with a larger serve of each wine, or more wines (up to 12) with much smaller serves - great idea.
Our host (James?) was very hospitable and clearly loves his job and the wines of Tassie.

“Great Fun!”

We dropped in here by accident. A great - and very cost effective - way to sample a bunch of Tasmanian wines. The gentleman behind the counter was both interesting and knowledgable.

“Terrific tourism initiative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

We went to Gasworks as part of the Alcohol History of Hobart tour by Robyn Everist of Hobart Walking Tours. It is a fantastic tourism initiative. Fabulous building, great ambience, and James, the Vignoron or host, was fabulous. Extraordinary knowledge of Tasmania's wine history and a lovely sense of customer service. Loved his wide wine knowledge generally. This is a fabulous initiative for Hobart as it showcases the wineries that tourists will want to visit. I would sincerely recommend a visit to the Gasworks to anybody who wants a classy and knowledgeable wine experience but also maybe has limited to to visit wineries and wants a screening process to decide what winery to visit. The actual set up at Gasworks, the rooms, maps on walls etc is classy and welcoming. James is great. Just go - a unique experience!

“Informative, friendly and straight to my head”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013 via mobile

We went on a Sunday and had a lovely time chatting to the bloke in charge. $10 let us try 12 out of 16 of their wines on offer. They didn't have a sparkling as part of their 16, but after I lost count of how many I'd tried, the guy opened up a bottle of delicious sparkling rose and shared it amongst everyone in the shop. Fun, tasty, interesting and great value.
