Owner description: Enjoy the sights, sounds, flavours, action and colour of Australia's best outdoor market - proudly operated by the City of Hobart - every Saturday from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Hobart's Salamanca Place. Set between graceful plane trees and the mellow sandstone facades of historic warehouses, Hobart's famous market at Salamanca Place attracts thousands of locals and visitors, every Saturday of the year. They come to visit more than 300 stalls for the food and music, fresh fruit, crisp organic vegetables, hot baked spuds, the warm aroma of a coffee and croissant, buskers singing the blues, stroking a harp or strumming a lively folk song. They come for breakfast, scrambled eggs and orange juice at a Salamanca cafe, then a stroll along the hundreds of stalls, meeting friendly people who make or grow what they sell. Salamanca Market highlights fine Tasmanian art & craft including hand-worked glass, innovative design in Tasmanian timbers, stylish clothing and bold ceramics. Salamanca Market is close to historic St David's Park on the fringe of Hobart's central business district. From the market, it's a short climb up Kelly's Steps to reach the Georgian cottages and the village atmosphere of Battery Point. Hobart's picturesque waterfront is also nearby - cross Salamanca lawns to the docks, where hard-working fishing boats are berthed close to cruising yachts and a square-rigger or two.

“Something for everyone”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

Everyone says when you visit Hobart not to miss out on the Markets. So glad we took the advise! We loved the experience. Such a great atmosphere and so supported by the locals too. Fresh produce, flowers, crafts, clothing, gifts etc. Parking can be a bit of a challenge so if the option of walking, public transport or taxi is available, suggest you take it. Well worth is though.

“Enjoyed it.”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Went to this market one Saturday while staying in Hobart, after having everyone tell me that I had to go. Was slightly apprehensive about it all being tourist junk, but it was actually ok.
It was bigger than I thought, and there was a good range of stalls. Fresh fruit and veg, clothes, food, crafts, art, souvenirs, and heaps of other stuff.

It did get crowded, but so long as you are happy to shuffle along slowly it isn't too bad.

I would go back tomorrow, if only for another ginger chilli beer from the stall near the top of the hill.... yuuuuuummmmmmmmmm.

“Magnificent Market - A Must Visit”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

If you are visiting Hobart on a weekend, then you *must* come here on a Saturday morning.

Salamanca Market has everything - food, wine, souvenirs, clothes, books, you name it. The is no doubt the market can get a little crowded, but its worth it. There is also plenty for the kids to look at, with buskers keeping people entertained, to art and craft.

Tips

1. Park about 500m away in a nearby street and walk. You probably wont get parking across the road due the large volumes of people.

2. There are public toilets near Smolt (restaurant) in Salamanca Place and also off Woobys Lane.

“Crowded cacophany”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

I've never been able to leave these markets without one or two curios. The buskers and entertainers are great fun and range from young kids to highly sophisticated folk bands. It is very crowded until after the lunch rush - suggest you go later in the day unless you're after something that sells out or you don't mind the push-and-shove.

“Wonderful”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

Had a great day at the markets, plenty to see and buy, lovely fresh fruit, honey and crafts and plenty of places to eat. But take a hat, it takes a while to see all the stalls.
