Owner description: Enjoy the sights, sounds, flavours, action and colour of Australia's best outdoor market - proudly operated by the City of Hobart - every Saturday from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Hobart's Salamanca Place. Set between graceful plane trees and the mellow sandstone facades of historic warehouses, Hobart's famous market at Salamanca Place attracts thousands of locals and visitors, every Saturday of the year. They come to visit more than 300 stalls for the food and music, fresh fruit, crisp organic vegetables, hot baked spuds, the warm aroma of a coffee and croissant, buskers singing the blues, stroking a harp or strumming a lively folk song. They come for breakfast, scrambled eggs and orange juice at a Salamanca cafe, then a stroll along the hundreds of stalls, meeting friendly people who make or grow what they sell. Salamanca Market highlights fine Tasmanian art & craft including hand-worked glass, innovative design in Tasmanian timbers, stylish clothing and bold ceramics. Salamanca Market is close to historic St David's Park on the fringe of Hobart's central business district. From the market, it's a short climb up Kelly's Steps to reach the Georgian cottages and the village atmosphere of Battery Point. Hobart's picturesque waterfront is also nearby - cross Salamanca lawns to the docks, where hard-working fishing boats are berthed close to cruising yachts and a square-rigger or two.

Many stalls and very crowded. A good market but perhaps not as good as some of Melbournes markets. I did like that there are also permanent galleries and shops in the laneways off the market area. Good bread and cheese stalls but not as many gourmet food stalls as I expected. Many great cafes to have breakfast/coffee. A very pleasant way to spend Saturday morning.

This would have to be one of the best markets I have experienced in Australia and would compare favourably with some of the souqs I have visited.
One of the best things about it is the plethora of Tasmanian products on offer, ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables right through to jams, honeys, local whiskies etc and any number of craft products, all within walking distance of the CBD.
If you don't fancy the snacks and drinks available at the market there is no shortage of cafes and restaurants within a couple of hundred metres of the markets.
A must see and do if in Hobart on a saturday.

Was looking forward to the markets Nd planned our trip to make sure we were in Hobart on a Sat was lucky to see it on the day just as we were leaving a massive storm came through and they had to close the markets early so happy I got to experience it it is very similar to man other markets around the country but to have it every weekend is such a bonus for the locals

Salamanca market does not disappoint. Being a town very focused on art, there are always quality stalls here brimming with excellent and reasonably priced local produce. From local jams through to intricately carved wooden artefacts you can find the extreme here or the practical. I purchased a bracelet that was made from an antique silver fork and the attraction for me was the jewellry maker was there demonstrating his work as we spoke to him.

There are professional buskers, delicious food stands, atmosphere and surprises everywhere you go. Such fun, I would need to revisit every Saturday for a month to see everything. Highly recommend a visit to experience it for yourself!

Great place to spend 2 to 3 hours on a Saturday morning.
Get there early to secure some street parking. Shop for some very good local produce.
