The room are great, the food is great, the service is.... (this will get boring, but you get the idea..)

There's not much you can say about the Islington that isn't glowing praise (I'd especially mention that the WiFi is free, unlike the Four Seasons!). The restaurant food is exceptionally good, quite the best we had in Tasmania.

However, its worth saying that the hotel is a bit out of Hobart and up the hill, we walked it easily but if you choose to drive car parking in Hobart can be expensive.

Thank you Mark for such kind words. With so much terrific food here in Tasmania, it's very flattering we made it to the top of your list!

We have recently returned from 5 nights at the Islington and had a wonderful stay there. As we were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary, we felt that the Islington must be special to have received so many glowing recommendations on Tripadvisor and this certainly turned out to be the case. The original house is set in lovely grounds and our room had a view of the gardens and Mount Wellington. The house itself has beautiful, art-filled spaces for guests to enjoy at any time, a sun-filled conservatory for breakfast and dinner, a welcoming and friendly staff and a choice of traditional or modern guest rooms. We had a hire car, so the location was not a problem, and being a bit out of the hustle and bustle of downtown was a plus for us. The Salamanca area is about a 20 minute walk away.

We stayed in a garden room, which was spacious and comfortable, with a view onto the gardens and up to Mt Wellington. It was super quiet most of the time, our only problem being one night when noisy guests in the two rooms above us, used the landing to talk loudly until after midnight. Soundproofed doors on all the guest rooms would be a good idea, and would ensure a peaceful night's sleep in such circumstances. We would like to especially thank the two chefs who cooked us lovely breakfasts each morning. The Islington made our stay in Hobart a lovely experience and we would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: We had a garden room on the lower floor, which we really liked. There are two garden rooms on the u...

Our congratulations on your anniversary Lillian and our thanks for posting such a lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed the peaceful serenity of our location - our guests often say it's like staying in the country, but only 5 minutes drive from the heart of Hobart. Thanks also for your suggestion about soundproofing. Our thick Tasmanian timber doors do keep most noise out, but we are currently investigating more noiseproof options.

We stayed here for a night, arrived in the evening and woke up in the morni9ng to an awesome breakfast.
The room was excellent, service was excellent, I just wished we could have stayed longer.
It is not as close to Hobart as I would have liked, by none the less a short drive to Hobart.

Thanks for the lovely feedback Mat - I agree the breakfasts are awesome! It's certainly a good idea to hire a car when in Hobart to take advantage of the many great short day trips in the area. But as you point out, it's not far into town, even on foot it's only a 20 minute stroll. I hope we see you for a bit longer on your next stay.

This was my first trip to Tasmania and seeing that Islington had a lot of good reviews, I decided to pop the question during my stay there. The hotel was wonderful with excellent amenities. The attention that the staff gave was undivided and they put up with all my requests (i.e. surprise room service, late check-in/dining). We will definitely be back again and will also recommend our friends and family for a visit.

Room Tip: We had the garden view room with the court yard.

Six of us have just stayed for the week end at this lovely boutique hotel. If only there were other places like this in Australia. We stayed at similar places in Sri Lanka. It is so well done, beautiful and comfortable. Nothing is a trouble and the service is friendly without any pretense. We had so many places to relax together as a group in one of the living rooms by an open fire. It's the perfect place for a girls week end or a few couples to stay together. Thank you for a lovely weekend ...

There's nothing we like better than the friendly conviviality of a group of friends enjoying the house and gardens. Our four sitting rooms are well stocked with books and games to occupy a quiet hour by the fire and we've just taken delivery of a beautiful new shagreen backgammon set for the Morning Room. I do hope you'll have the opportunity to use it on your next visit.

We stayed at the Islington for four nights as a family (six adults) having booked on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed as every aspect of our stay lived up to the high expectations from past reviews. Having driven through the private driveway gates we were met at the front door by the lovely, friendly face of Selina and taken for a tour of this lovely home finishing up in our rooms which were fantastically designed and oh so comfortable. We had the Wellington room and two garden rooms each of which was very well appointed, comfortable and as clean as the day the renovations were finished!!!! From that point one the experience only got better as we were made to feel at home by all the staff and we so appreciative of the special touches/ effort made by all to make our stay a special experience particularly the first dinner which was organized in the beautiful library. Congratulations to all at the Islington - you have made our family holiday a special time and we look forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: Can not go wrong with this property - garden rooms are lovely in the new wind with the rooms in the...

Thanks so much for your lovely feedback, Kate. I'm glad we helped make your family holiday a memorable one. The library is a great space when we have groups of guests staying - in summertime the French doors open onto the terrace for cocktails on a balmy evening and in winter it's so cosy with its own fireplace, the mahogany table laid and all the candles lit. See you on your next family visit.

This was our first trip to Tasmania and, not knowing much about Hobart, we relied on Tripadvisor for our hotel booking.
We chose the Islington because of the reviews and location and were not disappointed.
The hotel was fully booked when we initially enquired but we asked to be wait listed and were contacted a week or so before our trip when a room became available.

The hotel was full the weekend we stayed but with only 11 rooms it never felt crowded on impersonal.

Our room was in the original building and looked out over Mt Wellington. The room was spacious and well furnished. The bathroom had both a shower and bath, albeit a rather small one.

We had high expectations of the hotel due to the rates and review on trip advisor and they were well met.

We dined at the hotel on two nights and both meals were excellent with the added bonus on not having to worry about driving home afterwards!

The staff were very friendly and helpful in booking tickets and a taxi to MONA as well as advice on where else to go in Hobart.

The hotel is well located, a short walk to the city centre and a reasonable drive from the airport. A car is essential though.

Overall an excellent weekend that we hope to repeat someday.

I'm so pleased we had the chance to welcome you on your inaugural Hobart visit, it's always worth waitlisting just in case and it was lovely to welcome you to the Wellington Room, one of our most popular rooms. Located in the original Regency part of the house, this room is the only one with a slightly smaller bath as we weren't able to extend the bathroom size due to heritage restrictions. I trust the gorgeous views of Mt Wellington made up for it!
