“Dessert for the Eyeballs”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

On our frequent trips to Hobart we love to have the time on our hands to make a visit here and take in one of the art house movies on offer. We love this place and the fact you can enjoy a coffee, a snack or a drink as well ......... not to mention the fact that it is located in a restaurant area (aka foodies heaven).

“relax, have a sip and enjoy the film”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

The State Theatre has a wonderful range of films, including many that are not shown in the mainstream theatres. The atmosphere is intimate, with many of the theatres being small. All of them are comfortable, with cushy seating at the right angle for viewing the appropriately sized screen for the room. You are able to take a beverage with you into the theatre. The audience is more respectful than in the larger main stream theatres. There is less talking, phones are off.

Have dinner before or after the film. Also the attached indy bookstore is a pleasure to broose through.

A great evening or place to spend time in on a rainy afternoon.

“expensive and over rated”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

The State Cinema presents a reasonable range of contemporary cinema and art house movies. However, many of the cinemas have screens that are very small and no bigger than most people's home TVs, yet customers are charged the same price,as their main cinema venue. Further, it is the only cinema in Australia that offers no discount to film writers or professional actors. That is not a very good advertisement for an organisation involved in the entertainment industry.

“Thank goodness for the State Cinema”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Apart from screening the best films in town, the State Cinema has expanded to include food and a bookshop. This place has a warm, inviting atmosphere, and really is THE place to go for an impromptu evening out if you feel the need to brush shoulders with thinking people, fun people, and interesting people. The great films are an added bonus.

“Wonderful movie cinema”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

Went to see ' Moonrise Kingdom' here, it's renovated, gorgeous snug theatre, cafe, book shop all just up the road in North Hobart. Made going to the movies a special event. Easy to park or get the bus, and loads of eating places around.
