Markree House and Garden is a true delight. So original in presentation and a real view into the past and an individual's devotion to his family and home. You feel as tho you are being welcomed into a real home because there are no barriers or fancy displays that set things apart so your imagination is truly engaged with the toys and beautiful furniture and the setting.
Well worth a visit - a very special place. Our guide was wonderful and since the visit was by appointment, we were delighted with the special attention he gave to us and we learned a lot about the house, as well as Hobart.

Costs $10.00 for adults and kids under 12 free. This is a wonderful museum piece for the Hobart Museum, great to see it so well kept. Went with the kids, and this kept the 12and 10yo interested but not the 6yo. I really enjoyed viewing the artifacts that was retained and displayed. Worth the money

This is a real gem - the chance to see inside a house built in 1926 in the Arts & Crafts style. The furnishings in half the rooms are those from the owners of the house and this shows the lifestyle of the Baldwin family who had the house built as their family home. One of the rooms is the nursery and the display there includes many of Henry Baldwin’s toys including a railway set and everyone visiting Markree would just love to get down on the floor and play. It brings back great memories of days past.

There are also displays of ceramics, wooden carved furniture and silverware of the period. I also enjoyed the garden. I expect it would be even better when all the roses are in bloom but I’ll come back to see them in future.

There is a great little shop which has a good selection of books and also replica toys for sale. The only downside is that to get a tour of this great place you need to phone the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery on (03) 6211 4177 to book a guided tour. These are available Tuesday to Saturday and it is certainly worth the trouble.

Further to Andrew’s comments, there is now a Hobart Museum Pass which gives entry to four of Hobart’s top museums - Markree House Museum and Garden, Cascades Female Factory, Narryna Heritage Museum and the Maritime Museum of Tasmania.

While backpacking in Tasmania 25 years ago, we met Henry Baldwin and he invited us to stay in his home. He was a remarkable man and we so enjoyed our stay with him. He was very proud of his garden and it is great to see it being maintained so well.
I am so pleased that Markree is now open to the public. Hopefully, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will offer a combined ticket or find other ways to promote this gem.
Andrew
