“Would stay elsewhere another time”

We stayed one night at the Customs House and found it to be OK and no more. A big disadvantage was the location on a busy corner. There was a lot of general noise outside through to about 2.00am, then in the morning from about 6.00am heavy traffic plus rubbish collection started. All happening right under our window.
I mentioned this to David when we were checking out and he said the late night noise is even worse at the weekend!

Stayed at the Customs House Hotel after a flight from the UK. Hotel was in a great location and the view from our room was lovely. However on Saturday night didn't get a wink of sleep...as there was a live band performing downstairs in the bar!! If you go to this hotel and are not in your teens and very early twenties request a room on the second floor. This we did on our second night and got a great nights sleep. Breakfast was great and overall really good value for money. Would visit again

Basically you're paying for the location. Right in the heart of Salamanca Place and close to the edge of the city centre. The rooms are clean and tidy but lack in atmosphere. The rooms are above Hobart's busiest and most popular pub, although noise wasn't a problem when sleeping. I found it to be quite expensive for what you get. I'd happily stay here again if someone else was paying.

My fiance and I needed to get away from the heat of Brisbane so we planned a week in Tasmania in January. As we both work from home we needed a hotel with Broadband internet in the rooms. That and being in a central location were our only requirements.
The Customs House Hotel fit the bill perfectly. Not only is there broadband in each room, but it was included in the room rate! The rooms were freshly renovated and very large. The only complaints I had were the frayed edges of the towels and absolutely the worst toilet paper I have encountered in a hotel ever and I travel 2 weeks a month for work! It was like tracing-sandpaper. After two days I had to go out and buy my own.
But apart from those drawbacks the location was fabulous. We were able to walk absolutely everywhere and the food in the restaurant (a la carte breakfast included in the room rate as well!) was excellent. And contrary to some other reviewers, the service we experienced in the restaurant was excellent.
So I would recommend this place very highly. The only word of caution would be to ask for a room on the 2nd floor over the restaurant. These rooms have the best harbour views anyway and are the furthest away from the pub which has live bands on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I booked this hotel based on the good reviews on here and the hotel website, which is very misleading. This is a lower class hotel. The room was clean and tidy but painted grey and quite cold in style. It was situated over a pub with slot machines. Didn't have dinner but breakfast was nice. The staff were friendly. I guess if you want to save money it is cheaper than other options, but I think if you got a double room in a backpackers it wouldn't be that much different.

Overall: This was a pretty good hotel. It had all of the basic amenities, great location, good value for your money and the restaurant served excellent food at a reasonable price. Parking is free across the street if you are planning on bringing or renting car from 6PM to 8AM Mon-Fri, and metered any other time in between. It's true that there are steep stairs to access the hotel rooms and no elevator, so if you have difficulties with climbing stairs this may not be the hotel for you.

Food: Breakfast at the Customs House Restaurant is far better than any hotel breakfast I've had before. The menu selection is quite extensive (bacon, eggs and toast, eggs benedict, eggs florentine, smoked salmon and eggs, pancakes, continental breakfast), unlimited tea and coffee (juice costs extra unless you have the continental breakfast) and one breakfast item is included per person with the previous night's stay, which is great if you're looking to save a few dollars.

Location: Very good, the hotel is located right on the waterfront and close to pretty much everything in Hobart. If you're planning on staying here for a few days and only exploring Hobart, this is a great place to stay. Battery point, Salamanca place and all of the main attractions are within walking distance.

Housekeeping/Cleanliness: Upon arrival, the room was fairly clean. However, upon making tea and leaving it for housekeeping to replace the mugs and spoon with clean ones, they did not, but instead arranged the dirty cup and dirty spoon as if they was not used! It made me wonder if they replaced the towels every night or just picked up the dirty ones and put them away.

Room Amenities: Bathroom had nice hot showers, room included a TV, phone (which you are charged for calls), and refrigerator. The hotel does not have air conditioning, however during our stay it was fairly cool and we did not require it. Heat is available via wall heaters which do a very good job of warming the room quickly, and an electric heating pad is included under the bed sheets for further warmth.

Security: This is one of the weaker points of the hotel - our room was right next to the fire escape and the windows didn't seem like they locked, so people could open them from the outside. Also each room has key access not key-card access (which for some could be seen as more secure), so security may be questionable. I'd advise not to leave any valuables in the room when you are not there and take them with you whenever you leave the hotel.

  • Liked — Free breakfast, location, value.
  • Disliked — Security, lack of cleanliness of housekeeping.
  • Tips/Secrets — If you have a car, maybe consider another location on Sandy Bay.

The closeness to the Harbour and Salamanca Markets are the only thing this hotel has going for it.
The worst part of our experience was breakfast. We were seated and our order was taken, 45 minutes later I enquired how long it would be before our breakfast would arrive, I was advised 5 minutes, no apology given for the wait, another 15 minutes later the food arrived burnt, still no apology. At no time when we were seated, when the order was taken or during the 45 minute wait were we advised there would be any kind of delay. We complained on departure and were advised that if we we didn't like it we didn't have to eat breakfast there. I wouldn't recommend staying here under any circumstances.

  • Liked — Close to harbour and tourist information centre.
  • Disliked — Rude staff!
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay somewhere else
