Somerset on the Pier was a great place to stay on the Waterfront in Hobart. Close to Salamanca Place and close to restaurants like Mures. We were able to look out the window see all of the activity on the Harbour. MONA had just opened and we could see ferries filling up from the nearby Pier with museum goers.
Hotels in Hobart seem a bit expensive but the Somerset on the Pier was relatively good value for money, it was convenient and quiet at night. Restaurants and cafe in the same complex like Fish Frenzy and 42 degrees were good value.

The staff at Somerset on the Pier were great - my friend had misplaced her camera and the Front desk were happy to call around and check to see if it had been found. They were so proactive in assisting her.
Good space, great location, great service

Its all been said before, but I really do feel I have to say it again " This hotel is at the top of the pack" Now its not perfect, nothing ever is but it ticks so many boxes. let's start with the negatives:
1. You need to book a room at the far end of the hotel, then you are not over the bars below, which can be noisey on a Saturday evening.
2. The bathrooms are slightly dated, but how good to have an effecient washing machine and tumble drier. So good when you are on a long stay away
3. The rooms are hot upstairs, air conditioning needs to be implemented around the full appartment
4. Chopping board would be good.
5. Extra chair on the balcony when more than 2 guests staying.
6. Free Internet.
7. More storage would have been good
8. Car parking can be frustrating when you have to wait for a space
The positives:
1. The location 100% perfect for accessing the whole of Hobart
2. The staff very friendly an efficient
3. The actual accomodation excellent, though I would put the sofa by the window, not the table and chairs (we moved ours around!)
4. The milk in the fridge and basic washing up liquids
5. Great to have a dish washer
6. Our room had a balcony, and faboulus views, well worth paying the extra for

We loved it here and would most definitley go back. Thank you to all at The Somerset Hotel

We stayed here for 4 nights with a family of 5. 2 parents and kids aged 23, 20 & 17. Upstairs was configurerd with 1 double in its own room, 2 singles on the mezzanie and an extra bed was added for the 5th person down stairs. Serviced apartment style with fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and fully kitchen utencils.

We were up graded to a room with a balcony and If you have the option, I strongly suggest getting a balcony. It was fantastic. We were able to have breakfast outside in the sun, and watch the yachts cruise in and out all day and just relax in the beautiful weather.

Bad: The rooms can be a bit noisy. If the wind blows the front door closed it slams shut with a massive BANG! and all the rooms near you can hear it and feel it. Also, for some reason we could hear the TV in the room next to us constantly blaring (but that may be fault of guests staying there and their lack of volume control).
At the bottom end of the pier they have a reception place underneath the hotel, so on Fri/Sat nights you may have music and party chatter untill 12. There was a wedding on the Sat night we stayed there but as the bedrooms are 2 levels above it, it wasnt unbearable. There is hardly any public pedestrian noise either unless there is a function on.

Good: MY GAWD THE LOCATION!! Central to everything! Salamanca markets are just next to the next pier, and when the markets aren't on, that whole strip there has bars/ resturants to eat at. 3 blocks away is the main shopping district, 1 block away is the tourist info, next pier over is the famous Murs, right next door are the departure docks for the sight seeing boat tours. Its just a great central place that you can dash back to before dinner to freshen up or quickly grab your coat if it gets unexpectedly cold. Would defineatly recommend for first time traveller to Hobart.
The fact that it has an internal kitchen was a great help as it can be expensive feeding a family of 5 (adults), 3 times a day around this area. There is about 4 resturants/cafes that serve breakfast within a 10min walk but are quiet overpriced (compared to suburbia) as this is Hobart CBD. The surrounding resturants all lack originality, seem to have all copied the menus off each other and have only 5 standard menu items for lunch & dinner: scallops, a seafood pasta, fish n chips, steak, schnitzel, salmon. Again, the internal kitchen in this apartment helped for organsising quick sandwhiches for lunch in between booked activites or to pack for the day out.

We spent 3 nights in this superbly located apartment complex on the pier.
We had them send a man with a car collect us from the airport and Pons was very professional: a genuine chauffeur. We were attracted by the stunning location, and we were not disappointed. You only have to step outside to find the freshest of seafood and cafes galore. It is seconds from all the tour departure points (both land and sea) and just around the corner from Salamanca Place, with all its shops, restaurants and occasional festivals (such as the fabulous MonaFoma art & music festival while we were there). The reception staff were helpful & professional. Courtney in particular was outstanding, and Richard was reserved but still helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble and they were always courteous. As it was my husband's 50th birthday they gave us suite number 50, and some gourmet chocolate truffles which was sweet. The lobby and hallways are clean and gracious. The room we had was really lovely in terms of lay-out and views. The bed was comfy enough, and the sheets and pillows were clean and soft on the skin.
Now for the negatives, of which there are several... The bathroom is tired and very 80s - really needs an overhaul to ring it up to the standard of the rest of the complex. Given the size of the bathrooms they could potentially make them really impressive (which I would have expected given the nightly room charge and the fact that it's now 2011, not 1981).
The main criticism we have is the fact that they are inexplicably stingy with regards to glasses, crockery and cutlery. Everybody needs more than a pigeon pair of forks, knives etcetera. The wine glasses are tiny, low end glasses and if you have a friend come by for a pre-dinner bevvie, you have to give them a tumbler to drink out of. It's simply ridiculous given the prices they charge. I also think they should provide raw sugar and coffee bags, rather than the cheapest sachets and only white sugar. This is a gourmet city with so many foodies visiting that a motor-inn standard of tea & coffee provisions just does not cut it.
Another annoyance was the fact that you can't pick up ABC TV (or maybe it was SBS) because they're still on ADSL not digital or some such yesteryear nonsense, and they say that the nearby boats navigation systems interfere with reception. Again, when you're paying AUD$260 to $385 a night (dependent on the day of the week) they should invest in an up to the minute TV technology infrastructure. On this note they should also offer Ipod docking stations. This is one of Hobart's premier properties, so why are the owners so conspicuously cheap when it comes to trimmings that are considered normal everywhere else at this fee level? The internet suite really needs a second computer for internet access though, as people are obliged to lock in for 30 mins for $6, which is really annoying if you're in a hurry, but you just have to wait... (The internet cafe in Salamanca closes at 5pm, so can be inaccessible when you need it most.) There is also no local affordable gym that you can use at a reasonable per visit fee. Reception directed us to the Tasmanian Aquatic Centre 20 mins walk up-hill where my husband was asked to pay $18 entrance. When you just want to o a 45 min work-out, that is really rude. I therefore think Somerset should invest in a few treadmills and a handful of free weights to keep visiting fitness bunnies happy. Meanwhile, brisk walks around the area are the only option for fitness while staying on site, assuming good weather, which you can't, because it rains regularly of course!
The room was also rather stuffy, so needed more than a stand-up fan (which we found in a closet). If you could open more than one window this would have been helpful in naturally ventilating the room. I understand that air-conditioning may not be used most of the year, but they should try to provide some solution to the cooling issue.
Sat night stays are very noisy til about 1am, as mentioned by many other reviewers, but that didn't really bother us too much - it is the heart of the entertainment precinct after all.
Given these irritating factors mentioned above, I do think the property is considerably over-priced. The location however is second to none. We absolutely loved it, so it is a shame to have to criticise - but the small negative points do add up and require a spot-light. If the owners or investors could cough up a bit of money to invest in these tweaks and improvements, it could be an outstanding vacation and business traveller property. As it stands currently, it's NQR (not quite right!).

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your recent feedback.

We were delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay as we certainly pride oursleves on our product, location and the customer service we provide.

Our sincere apologies for the negative items that you have mentioned in your review and for the impact this had on your stay and I will try and address them all below:

- Bathrooms - whilst clean, practical and large they are in need of an update and we have been in dicussion with our building owners on this matter. I am sure you can appreciate that this is a large undertaking and will take some time to happen.

- Glasses, crockery - We do need to set a "par" level for all items in rooms which we generally find adequate for the majority of guest. Of course if guests need more of any items our housekeeping staff and guest service staff are only more than happy to provide additional items and are available 24 hours 7 days per week for any assistance guests may require.

- TV reception - Currently our living room television is analogue and doesn't recieve as good reception as the bedroom television that is digital. We are looking at upgrading televisions in the next 12 months as ABC is certainly a channel that is affected by the radio traffic from being in a waterfront location. We are also introducing Ipod docks in to all rooms and this should be completed by the middle of 2011.

- Guest lounge internet - we generally find this is only used by a handful of people each day and find that one computer is sufficient for the amount of use. Of course if we find demand for this facility increasing we would certainly look at additional computers.

- Gym facilities - Somerset on the Pier used to have a gym however due to lack of use this was removed. Certainly if there is a demand for this facility we would certainly consider it again, however, as it currently stands this demand doesn't appear to exist. A lot of guests are happy to take a run or walk around our beautiful waterfront.

- Ventilation - the rooms are heated and airconditioned, however, being loft style than can be a bit warmer upstairs. Unfortunately due to the unique building design and sesitive waterfront area we are limited in solutions to this, however, we will be installing ceilling fans in all apartments this year to help resolve this issue and currently all rooms are provided with a pedestal fan.

We thank you again for your feedback and I hope by the above you can understand that we do appreciate all feedback and act on this wherever possible. We are constantly trying to improve our product and service in order for our guests to have the most enjoyable stay whilst at Somerset on the Pier.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Somerset on the Pier when next you travel to Hobart!

Yours Sincerely
Justin Geddes

it is a great location, we stayed for 5 nights, but we lost one night, as there was a function below until 11.30 pm, and it was so loud that even the floor was vibrating...the complaint did not help, they just said, oh, sorry , it is a different business, we cannot do anything!!!!!
tgis is not worth the high room rate.

Paying $300 per night per room we were kept awake till 1 am by the thump thump music and loud voices on the pier one level below us which was a night club called T -42 or something.
Incredibly annoying as we could not sleep, so felt tired the next day attending a family function. Complained to managment and they moved us the next night and sent a ( pre printed!) note apologizing for the noise!! Seriously they cannot expect people to put up with this. There is also a function centre further along the pier underneath other rooms so noise is a likely occurrence if staying at this place. Also note that the bedrooms are on mezzanine floor and the shower is in a step in bath.
